SANDY SPRING, Md.- As Montgomery County Police were investigating the discovery of a body in the woods off Brooke Road in Sandy Spring Friday afternoon, they got a call of another body found floating in the Triadelphia Reservoir at nearby Brighton Dam.

Late Friday night, Howard County Police reported the man found in the reservoir was wanted for allegedly trying to kill a woman friend the night he went missing three weeks ago.

46-year-old Robert Lewis Thornton of Gaithersburg was wanted by Howard County authorities on attempted first-degree murder charges.

Investigators say on the night of May 12, Thornton chased a woman friend into the woods next to Brighton Dam and cut her neck. Police say he had run her off the road with his pickup truck as she tried to get away from him in her car.

After cutting the woman, Thornton ran off on foot and disappeared, according to police.

As investigators recovered the body from the water, several of Thornton's relatives and friends watched from the bridge above.

Two hours earlier, Montgomery County Police had been called to that wooded area in Sandy Spring for a report of a body found in a thicket of bamboo.

"It appears to be sheer coincidence," said Montgomery County Police Corporal Dan Friz. "They're awfully close to each other, but at this point we don't have anything indicating that they are related."

In the Sandy Spring case, the remains are so badly decomposed, investigators say they do not know the victim's sex, race, age or how long it had been in the woods. Police say the body was found wrapped in cloth, discovered on property near a retirement community.

Detectives searched a wide area near where the body was found looking for evidence that might help them identify the remains. They say an autopsy may help shed light on the mystery. Police tell FOX 5 nobody has been reported missing from that nearby retirement village.
