Despite Violations, Fines and Court Orders, an Illegal Milton Junkyard Remains Open

Apr 27, 2011 Full story: Seven Days 10

For almost a decade, Milton junkyard owners Gilbert and Blanche Rhoades operated an unlicensed and uncertified solid-waste facility , or so ruled a Chittenden County judge on February 11.

The picture shows a large pile of tires. A as fire protection specialist I can attest to the fact that tire fires are extremely difficult to extinguish and are very damaging to the environment. There is not a good history regarding these types of operations.Action should be taken at once to abate a possible fire.

I agree. However, the owner is not going to remove the tires, and neither is the state or town. The town of Milton better hope that the tires never catch on fire or are set on fire.

Man thats a very scary thought knowing that if rhodes dos'nt get his way and if he gets pissed off enough that all he has to do is go on vacation and pay some druggie or somone that is in need of $ to drop a flame and then half the town will get poluted out and theres nothing that can be said other than i told yea so.i say build a metal building over the tires and lock it up NOW!a suggestion:i've noticed that they are useing crushed tire and rubber chips and pieces around play grounds in parks cant they be donated for other uses?is there a way to get rhodes away from the the ability to have an accidentle fire there in retaliation of his wants,it only takes the ingnition of his torches to cause hell to happen,Im scared now.shit he laughed and joked about a flameing monkey after a employer burned to death from a gas tank fire years ago i know a family member of the victim that was ready to fight about that incident.and as far as him still buying cars and metal i know thats the truth by involvment,

Yup, it is a scary thought. That article says the fire chief says they would have to call in specialized fire fighters and equpment from out of state! And evacuations??? That is just crazy!! Why is no one in Milton concerned about this? Why is the town manageer not doing anything? Why are the people of Milton not up in arms over this? I think people are half asleep today and too busy with their ipads and cell phones and have forgotton how to deal with reality!!!

I am very concerrned about this and think the folks in Milton need to do something ASAP. This is an emergency just waiting to happen. Instead of just sitting around waiting, the people of Milton and the town officails need to get off their butts and do something NOW before it is too late.

The people of Milton just don't care, it is really sad that they don't take any pride in their town at all.

Well, the state will be concluding their case in court soon. The state has hired a company to remove 1/3 of the tires. They have no plan to do anything else over there. So now it becomes a town issue.

Interesting that NONE of the people posting here are actually FROM Milton...hell even I'm not.

But I should think that you all should maybe mind your own business...If it truly is "illegal", it will be closed and the tires removed. Otherwise...it's really none of your business.

And there are plenty of uses for old tires...and plenty of places to recycle them. I'm sure that the owner of this "scrap yard" will do what he needs to do when he needs to do it.

Man, since when have Vermonters become such BUSY BODIES..........
