I am a volunteer, for an animal rescue organization, and I was informed a few days ago that two of our rescue dogs were killed by their foster parent. A short time ago, a Cecil County Resident, Cheryl Hite, of North East, Maryland, signed over two owner surrender forms (one for each dog), letters describing the dogs, and all vet records to our organization.

Ms. Hite surrendered her two Miniature Pinchers, Mia and Karla (both approximately 5 years old), because she was having issues housebreaking them. Ms. Hite had agreed to foster the two Minpins she surrendered, until they were adopted. Our Regional Coordinator (RC) mailed two dog tags for Ms. Hite to put on Mia and Karla. Our organization posted these dogs on our website, so they could be adopted into a new home.

On March 7, 2007, Ms. Hite sent our organization an email stating that she had taken Mia and Karla to the Cecil County SPCA last week. Ms. Hite had the SPCA euthanize Mia and Karla without informing them that she was no longer the owner of the dogs. The members of our organization are outraged that the woman who was fostering Mia and Karla had them killed. The RC and one of our volunteers had emailed other rescue organizations to request that they put Ms. Hite on their Do Not Adopt list.
To all the residents in and around Cecil County, please DO NOT GIVE Cheryl Hite any animal to care for.

Here is a copy of one of Cheryl Hite's emails that she sent to our organization:

Look...I made a very tough decision and I really don't need to be shouted at because I didn't realize I was supposed to ask your permission. It was pretty clear that nobody else was going to adopt them because they simply weren't willing to be civilized.

What is wrong with you people? You are certainly within your rights to be angry about this situation. However, posting someone's personal email and all of this is way beyond the pale.

I have known Cheryl for nearly 20 years. She is a clear-thinking wonderful woman who ALWAYS does what she feels is the right thing for all parties involved.

To come on a blog site and leave anonymous messages about her without being willing to leave your own email addresses for response is lower than low.

I agree her personal email should not have been posted - however, this situation is disgraceful. "the dogs can't be civil?" - what is that supposed to mean? Has she EVER heard of a dog trainer? Dogs are eager to please and very trainable. If she truly believed what she was doing was right, then she is delusional. She should have let the rescue decide whether they were "adoptable" or not.

If you look @ the dates the DNA has been out since 2007 (I assume at time of incident), however it seems it is being recirculated (rightly so IMO).

I disagree. Having her email posted is minor, given her actions. Was it "right" to share her personal email address? That's debatable. What's not debatable is that she basically stole dogs from a rescue, then took them to what many argue is the WORST shelter on the east coast (do a search on Cecil County ASPCA...read and weep) and requested them killed. And the story being 3 years old? So what. Even when crimes are brought to trial, it's often years later. And No, I won't "get over it" or "move on." Either learn from history or you'll repeat it. I'll take the former.
This is a criminal situation. Ms Hite's actions are morally reprehensible and illegal. I personally couldn't give a rat's a** about the status of her personal email; I wish she were prosecuted. But, living in the next county over, as I do, I'm well aware that we'll see pigs fly before Cecil County decision-makers take a stand against animal cruelty.

What everyone here fails to see is that posting her personal information leads to folks overreacting in equally egregious ways. Do we really believe that these actions, despicable as they seem to some of you, are worth the type of overreaction toward more serious harm that some people are prone to? The only steps that should have been taken here are legal ones - not physical ones and that's what I'm afraid will happen.

You think you know it all but you don't. the dogs belonged to this lady. She was going to give them to a rescue group but they wouldn't take them in. they were still her dogs, in her home. And you don't know what sickness these dogs had, which they did. Maybe she should have let them suffer in pain. then you would be happy and oh so supererior to everyone else.

Why is this story being recirculated now? Seems like a revenge act. Who benefits? Who is harmed?

Pigs flying? If they fly in Harford County, would not that be considered animal cruelty? Really, I think we need to quit using animals to reiterate any derogatory inference.

All you so called animal lovers from other states who know nothing about the real facts should just shut up. Those of us local people who DO know the facts know that Ms. Hite was a caring person who did the best she could when faced with sick dogs who were suffering.

This happened three years ago! Why are you now attacking this woman? Oh, yes, some so called "rescue" groups think they can make some donation money by attacking this woman? Where were you when she needed help to pay the huge vet bills these dogs needed???? She paid out of her own pocket to give sick animals a humane end. Bless her, do not curse her!

Truth, let us let this rest. These crazy people will attack well meaning and caring dog parents three years later! Let us not keep this garbage and BS up on the topix list. Let us allow these dear dogs rest in peace three years later! Let us allow this poor woman, who only tried to do what was right, to be at peace for her hard but correct decision to bring her sick furbabies to a painless end!

It's hard, dog person, to do that when it's a friend who doesn't deserve to be blasted with her email address across two states plus the web by a whackjob who puts dogs before humans.

It seemed like she was confused on which rout to go. I think she was torn on giving these dogs a second chance or putting them down. She started to do the best things for the dogs by talking to a rescue, but some rescues aren't big enough to give enough support to help the owners in their time of need. Not saying the rescue didn't do their best within means and reason. If she did her research there are other rescues all over the country that would love to help her in this situation. The stress was too much for her and she did what SHE though was best. She should have reached out to the rescue and told them her feelings and I'm positive action would have been taken before death was in the future for the little ones.

If they did have medical issues that made house training hard...there is the wewe ban that works great. My family owns a dog that has a bladder issue, they love animals and their love helped them work through it. But not everyone has the resources, but there are places out there to help. There is an organization I saw on the news that helps owners keep their dogs through financial hardships (the name escapes me).

I agree the email should be left out because there are die heart animal lovers that may take things too far. I believe people post these things to help others, rescues and themselves heal. We need to be more self aware and show others this is not what to do to animals or as an act of "revenge". I feel this helps other rescues to be aware/hesitant to adopt out to this woman. If she were to get another dog which may be more than she can handle who's to say she won't do the same when the stress becomes too much for her like it did in 07.

A rescue dog should always be returned to the rescue group! Where I foster our dogs can NEVER be put down for reasons such as thoses. My current foster bit a teen so bad the child needed plastic surgery....they gave us the dog and today he is in home to a man who is retired and has no children. Every dog needs another chance.
