Why didn't Mathes use the $40,000(plus) he spent on three used cars and buy patrol cars? I guess it was really important that he have a new Explorer, while his deputy's drive patrol cars with over 150,000 miles on them. Maybe he could sale some of those wrecked Tahoe's and use the money towards patrol cars. The deputy's deserve new patrol cars, the Sheriff does not have the right to go out and purchase himself a new or used vehicle every year. Then he has the gonads to go on tv and complain that the commission won't give him any money for new patrol cars. He thinks the people in this community are stupid and don't see through his dirty tricks. Well, I see through them and so do alot of people.

Since the deputies neither have to pay to purchase their patrol cars, pay for maintenance or any other repairs or come up with a replacement if their car breaks down, why all the fuss about not having brand new patrol cars?? Even the older ones I've seen are still nice cars. I don't care what kind of car I drive at work, if my employer is providing the vehicle and gas, I'm happy.

Maybe he needs to hire new deputy's that know how to drive. Money, money and more money that is all Mathes wants. When he is on T.V. that is all that comes out of that mans mouth. We need to get that man out of there cause he is not doing anything anyways.

Carter Countian - 2 of the 3 police cars that was on the news were wrecked because people don't know how to drive. Neither of the 2 were the policeman's fault.

Here's a thought that would save the county lots of $$ in gas. Take home cars should not be driven by "officers" that don't need them. For example: B.M., P.C., B.H., S.Mc., J.B. The list could go on and on. Why does a fellow church member of the Sheriff (aka S. Mc.), whose only job duty is to approve or deny work release need a take home car? He makes almost $28,000 yearly, let him buy his own gas. Why should county taxpayers have to foot the bill?

Talking about buying new cars and having problems with gas prices. Here is a way to solve the problem. When the county is setting up rador shut off you motors and put on a coat. When the officers go into a place to eat for 30 min. shut off the car you are not paying for the gas If everyone in the county would complan baybe we could solve the problem. You see move of the county officers in town doing there on think not out in the county call chris and see what he has to say about that

There is 4 deputies per shift x 4 shifts = 16 cars. Other Units: Chris 1 Ford Explorer Ron Street 1 Crown Vic (Maraodo) spelling is off. Bobby Huffman 1 Tahoe Brooke Mullins 1 something (sheriffs woman) Penny Cornett 1 old crown vic Rocky Croy 1 crown vic School Officers 5 patrol cars? Why? I have the answer, when a deputy comes to work he drives his own car, Pick up cruiser parked in parking lot and do his 12hr shift come back to office drop off car and let other shift pick-up other car from off shift etc. You only need 8 patrol cars per 24 hrs do the math it would save a ton on gas and excess wear and tear on cars. I work and my job does'nt provide a car for me to drive. I think the public should ask the commissioners to get this to happen.

Think about this - how would you feel if something happened and you called the police and they said, I'm sorry but it will be about 20 minutes we are in the middle of a shift change.Policeman driving cars home could actually benefit you, because they could stop at your house on their way through, as if they were in their personal car and off, why should they have to waste their gas to come help someone who is just going to bash the hell out of them on this "little forum". I agree some people (the secretary, bailiffs, cleanup crew people, and some others) do not need to take a car home.

I understand turning them off in the winter, but can you imagine how hot they are in the summer with their uniform, belt that holds a pretty hefty amount, boots, and not to mention their vest. How about you set in a car for a while with just the window down with all of that on and see how comfortable you feel.

I want the deputies who serve us to be comfortable, but if we have to make sacrifices, turning off the cars when you aren't moving is a good way to save with gas at $3+ a gallon.

Their sacrifice would be a heat stroke, idiot! They have to wear a shirt under their vest, then of course their bullet proof vest and a dress shirt. Lets dress you up like that and set you in a car @ 90 degrees for an hour, I'll be you could not make it 15 minutes.

Johnson city requires that all officers spend at least thirty minutes a shift with there cars off to save gas , they utilize that time as traffic enforcment watching a light or stop sign or sometimes at the school zones it does help even though it seems like such a short amount of time. It is hot in those uniforms but 30 minutes in the car with the windows down isnt really all that bad. They have to spend alot more time without air condtion when they work a walking detail such as the carnivals and festivals or the fourth of July things.
