Can we just put a stop to the shenanigans that have been going on the last month or so with the Carroll County Genealogical Society?
We have heard the volunteers at the CCGS going back to commissioners numerous times not ask for more time for a mover, but rather to complain and doing anything they can and buffalo anyone they can to stop this move. Rather than step back and look at the opportunity they have been given to move into a more spacious venue with parking and much more handicapped accessible for the older members of the CCGS.(One member took an unfortunate fall a while back and injured themselves trying to maneuver the stairs at the 2nd street location.) The new location would have more parking than the old place and they would be much more visible. The rent would also still be free! They wonder why they were only given two weeks? Well that would most likely be the fact that the building the new renters (Rex Energy) were in had the front basically taken off due to structural issues.
May we call a spade a spade here? The CCGS did not want to move for the simple reason of they did not want change. They have been very fortunate in the past and they have been wonderful curators of the old records, but like most things it is time for some change. Sure they might have saved the county some money, but they have also taken in nearly $20,000 in the past year off copies for packets and old records. With everything digitalized that $20,000 could pay the salary of a worker to take care of the records or it could pay on average $1667.00 a month in rent to a location of THEIR choosing. What is this money currently doing and who is controlling it.
Last but not least, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to have overwhelming sympathy for the volunteers of the CCGS. They ask the public for sympathy on one hand and then go to commissioners and tear into anyone asking them to change. They have plans to disband at the end of the year, since they lost the opportunity to move into the new building based on their stubbornness. Also, it is becoming public knowledge that the new renters of the building found a poorly written note taped to their door one morning stating how terrible it was what they were doing to a group of little old ladies. Well, those “little old ladies” better start acting a little more lady like. Be good representatives of Carroll County please, for all of us.

You are so in error on so many points that it will be fun to read the replies this week. You are so sadly misinformed. Perhaps you work for the county, or are married to a commissioner. However, you promise an entertaining week of responses to your opinions.

Yes Islander you are correct YOU are so in error that it does make a fun read. Why do you feel that Shenanigans is in error? What are you basing your information on a genealogy volunteer, hearsay, or what. Shenanigans is basing it on facts that were presented in public forums at the Commissioners office.
The CCGS people at the Commissioners meeting threatened the Commissioners that there would be repercussions if they would make the library move. They never asked for time to move just that they should be ashamed for moving them. The commissioners offered them a free building that is larger and on main street and all one level.(Look at the Auditors page for building information) Plus it has two parking spots per the paper which is more than 2nd street building.
Per the CCGS newsletter this spring it mentions how one of the members fell and broke a leg on the stairs at the library (That's right I am a member of the CCGS). Also there was advance notice that there could be a possible move in the future for CCGS that was ignored, especially even after the Linke apartments were sold next door by the county.
The CCGS openly admits that they made $20,000+ off the copies of the documents. Fantastic for them and whoever the workers were who performed the task. Job Well Done. But why not invest that money into change that either is rent or finance generating methods?
I do not know about the sign on the door of Rex but am not surprised if it is true, as shameful as that may be. Especially considering they did not ask to move there according to the paper it was offered to them since it was for the short term. Since the building is a debt on the county!
Also, since we have a larger vacant building on Main Street why should the county commissioners pay to maintain both? Pick the better building and sell the other. That is the responsible thing to do and good for the commissioners for being responsible with our tax dollars on that.
Also, in the CCGS letter they mentioned that their membership was down because of the internet. Well ladies maybe its time to redo the webpage as proposed in your CCGS newsletter. Maybe that will bring new members. BE PROACTIVE things change and you have to accommodate. If you don't believe me walk down to Main Street and look around.
Finally I am truly embarrassed to be a member (albeit I'm a non active member because I still work) with the way they issue threat about disbanding and sending the records to Mansfield. If your going to disband fine but maybe donate some of your collection to the Carroll County Historical Society, Malvern, Magnolia, Minerva Historical Societies or the Public Library or dare I say it the Carrollton Bicentennial People who were out at the fair because CCGS is/was a member of that group. Please don't insult us by threats!
CCGS be responsible own up to YOUR mistake of not graciously accepting the new building because it WAS offered under the same terms. You cast your lot now its time to live with it.

Have been reading the post here and I'm confessed.
I'm posting the link to the Commissioners minutes could someone please copy and paste on here the threat the people from the genealogy group made. I can't seem to find any threat in the minutes.
Also I really like your sentence genealogy member that is below. WE should it not read they?
Also, since we have a larger vacant building on Main Street why should the county commissioners pay to maintain both?

I think Confessed has a vested interest and I think Geneology Member is referencing the facebook comments and got "confessed". Also, I think Geneology Member was correct with the word of WE. Either they meant WE as the geneology society had a chance at a larger building on Main Street or WE as in citizens of this county. Must confess that we shouldn't get hung up on word usuage because it gets confusing.
Here is my question though. Why is the Commissioners not providing free building to all non-profits? Or why aren't they providing materials to other non-profits so they can make $20,000?
