New Hampshire Senate Committe Votes To Kill Marriage Bill, Transgender Bill

A key state Senate committee yesterday proposed killing two bills aimed at bringing social change to New Hampshire. Neither vote is binding but each severely hampers each bills' respective chances of passage. The full Senate will consider both bills on Wednesday, April 29. Call your NH legislator now!

Actually, it IS surprising ! New Hampshire has a long history of being a Libertarian state.

Sounds like they are trying to kill the marriage bill because it's too evenly split for & against. What's wrong with the full Senate voting and just see what happens?

Disappointing, yes. Surprising, no. Many of the libertarians I've encountered are not big fans of government recognition of marriage, period. So I'm not sure why you would expect New Hampshire's libertarian history to equate to what amounts to an expansion of government into people's lives.

That said, what we're really seeing here is partisanship. It can hardly be argued that there's no difference at all in the likelihood of Republicans supporting or opposing the recognition of same-sex couples' marriages, vs. that of Democrats. That's not to say that people don't buck the party line on this issue, or even that the party line is exactly clear and consistent for that matter. Bottom line: If we're talking about trying to get a bill out of committee, you can't discount the role of partisanship.
