the roads/highways were intended for vehicles. not bicyles. its not only dangerous to the cyclists, but to the drivers of vehicles. i dont mean to sound harsh, but i think they should stay OFF the roads!!

I love to ride my bicycle on the road! I am thankful that the law understands how important road cycling is. It is my passion, and the only time I feel free is when I am riding my bike. The greenways suck because I have to yield to walkers (who will not stay in their lane). Where as on the road I can go as fast as I want (15-30 mph), and cars must yield to me. I know where you are coming from, but the bicycle has been around for as long as cars, so I can't see why more people don't use them. It is a great way to get around!

I don't mind the bicycles. I get it. Ride your bike. It's exercise and riding it on the sidewalk can be dangerous.

BUT what I HATE are mopeds. I have contemplated killing many people on mopeds. The sad fact is that MOST of the people are on mopeds because they lost their license to DUI charges. So now because they can't stop themselves from driving while drinking I have to go 20 in a 55.

I met a guy the other day who got a ticket for riding his bike on the sidewalk in Morganton.

GV,

I would not put your "cars must yield to me" statement to the test too many times on rural Caldwell County roads. If you do, all I can say is we would sure miss you.

Most people are ok, but there are a few idiots driving Caldwell County roads. There is this one lady who drives a tan mini-van who is literally trying her best to kill me.

Rights AND Responsibilities of cyclists on roadways in NC:

Bicycles are legal vehicles under NC law and must comply with all traffic laws: traffic signals, stop signs, signaling for turns.

Bicycles must travel in the roadway (to the left of the white line, NOT the shoulder), in the same direction as other vehicle traffic.

Bicycles should stay to the right of the roadway as far as is reasonable and safe, but may occupy the ENTIRE lane if necessary.

Cars must pass vehicles (including bicycles) with a minimum safe distance of 2 ft.

A cyclist will only delay you a few seconds, if at all, so please be prudent and safe. Remember that the life you risk is NOT your own!

GV,

Please do NOT utilize this rule too many times. I have no doubt there are more than a few living here who will gladly give you a brief (and painful) physics lesson regarding mass and kinetic energy.

Or anyone from that same class could just drive by real slow with a sawn-off shotgun. Of course now that I think about it that would require some premeditation, and perhaps an accomplice... Your way may be better.

I always do my best to be considerate of those riding bicycles.

The complaints that I have are some of the choices the cyclists make for their riding pleasure. Connelly Springs Road during the morning drive to work, or during the evening between 5-6pm are very dangerous times to be on this road.

There is also an idiot young man who evidently lives on or around Cajah's Mtn road that will ride a BMX type bike and will sway from left to right in the lane, all the time looking back at the traffic behind him. I figure this young man is either an idiot, or has some sort of mental condition, in which case he should be removed from the road.

It is well known in the biking community that the Connelly Springs Road is without a doubt the most hazzardous road in our county to cyclist. I never ride on the Connelly Springs Rd. I believe you're right about the BMX guy.

There was a guy last week riding on Connelly Springs Road on one of those low riding three wheeled contraptions. He had a long pole with an orange pennant for visibility purposes as the rider was sitting very low to the ground.

We passed him before he crossed the bridge into Caldwell County. I haven't saw him before, or since. He was crazy enough to be riding between 5-6pm.

That sounds like a recumbent trike, those things go pretty fast.

Cyclists following the law. I think that's what drives so many motorists crazy.

How often do you see a solo cyclist or a group of cyclists follow this....Usually, the blow through stop lights and stop signs. Cyclists scream about "having a right to the road", yet get pissy when you point out their flagrant violations of the law. What gives?

Bicycles are legal vehicles under NC law and must comply with all traffic laws: traffic signals, stop signs, signaling for turns.

I have no problem sharing the road with bicycles, however following the law also means driving the speed limit. Cyclists, or any vehicle for that matter, traveling under the posted speed limit create a hazard. Some states actually have laws on the books that prohibit bicycles on state routes. I think a cyclist riding on a road that has a speed limit of more than 25mph is in courteous and extremely dangerous.

You're right, and I am guilty of this. I blew through a red light the other day and a state trooper who was watching me, just through his hand up and waved at me. He must have been a bike guy. I hate coming to a complete stop because I have to slide out of my peddle clips, then once starting back moving, have to lock them back in again while at the same time trying to peddle, all the while traffic is coming up from behind as I am awkwardly trying to get started.
