Kirby of Charlottesville can change their policies to protect their workers and the public. I still think it is intrusive, unsafe and very disrespectful to just knock on doors expecting folks to let you in their homes, their private space so that YOU can make a buck. The "bandits" may or may not work for Kirby--but I believe this should be a wakeup call for your company. Change your policies instead of expecting the public to take a chance on letting the wrong people into their homes so you can make a living!!

Interestingly, there is a similar story out of Pittsburgh from 2006. See the story at http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtri...
that is very interesting--sounds like the same methods being used around here.

I live in Greene Co. and have been visited by the group claiming to be from JMU (in the middle of the day) when I just happened to be home from work with my sick child. The guy that came to my door was extremely odd, and I'm certain that had a not have met him at the door with a .38 revolver he would have been much more pushy...While he came to my front door there were three other males in his pewter colored Tahoe waiting and were obviously scoping out the residence. I called the Greene Co. police dept and they sent an officer out who discovered they had a permit for door to door sales in Rockingham Co. but not Greene. While they were violating the law they claimed ingnorance and said they didn't realize they had left the area of Rockingham.

Bottom line is that I felt very threatened by these guys, but the way I figure it, there was a total of four of them, and my chamber holds six bullets, so they were obviously out numbered. I hope they are smart enough to not come back with or without a permit.

I hate to say this to legitimate Kirby (or other) dealers, but the days of letting strangers into your home are over. And on the opposite side, I wouldn't want to go into a stranger's house as part of my job. How many pizza delivery folks have been robbed or worse? With internet purchases on the rise, door-to-door sales persons are being replaced. Get a web site and sell that way. It is a shame, but our world is a different place than it was 30 or 50 years ago.

The trouble that I see is everyone is first to jump on the Sheriffs Office for not notifying residence, but what where they going to say? That there are folks that go door to door selling products! There have been door to door salesman for decades doing the same thing, and giving away promotional items to get you to look at their products. Wake up folks!! This is not new. Everything that I have heard or read, is that there have been no other reports of violence, just people going door to door trying to sell something. I hear people making comments about the police letting them go once they are identified, and you know what unless they are breaking the law, they have to.

OH BUCK ! We know salesman callin at our homes is NOT NEW...but remember when we did not have to lock our doors? Our kids could go play outside without us fearing the unknown....TIMES have changed...BIG TIME and its time maybe to put the door to door saleman to rest. I have clearly marked my turf.."NO SOLICITATIONS"...I also am on the "NO CALL LIST"~
Thank you for respecting ME ~ I feel I am respecting the door to door by letting them know UPFRONT I have NO intrest in whatever they are selling ~ KEEP OUT !

My purpose of commenting about notifying the police was one to let folks know that the police too are aware and are investigating the incidents. Secondly in Greene County you are required to have a county issued permit for door to door sales! The folks who visited my residence did not have a permit and the officer gave them a verbal warning, so in fact they are breaking the law!!

Hooray!! someone finally figured it out. There IS a differance between the criminal act of home invasion and a door to door business. Now if everyone can stop branding all who knock on doors as criminals and stop wasting the police forces time, maybe they could catch real bad guys/gals

TRYIN TO MAKE A LIVING wrote:
I just would like to say to everyone that We Feel deeply terrible about what happened to the Lady in buckingham county. I have no idea who could have done such a horrible thing. We are the Kirby company of charlottesville virginia. Our company does not allow us to do advertising over the television or radio so the only way that we advertise is buy going door-to-door. We do give gifts to the people for letting us come in and shampoo a room of carpet for them. We show them the kirby cleaning system and we clean there carpet for helping us our with our advertising. The kirbys are for sale but there is certainly no obligation for the people to buy them. We are very concerned about people getting us confused with scammers, thief's, robbers and even attackers. We are just trying to make a living and these attacks that these FAKE SALES PEOPLE are doing to our community is hurting us to. Its is very tough for us with all this trash talk going on. I understand everyones concerns but our people tell everyone that they talk to that they are with Kirby and they are NOT pushy or they would be FIRED. All of the people that work for my business have permits and my vehicals are properly registered with the police. All that I am asking is to always be causious but give us a fair chance to make a living too it is our constitutional right.. WE ARE A LEGITIMATE BUSINESS>KIRBY COMPANY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE.
There are other kirby offices in Lynchburg and in harrisonburg and Richmond. They do work in our territory and there is nothing that we can do about that but we are here to stay in charlottesville and we would never allow anything to jepordize our business. Thanks for reading...
You need to go back to school and take an English class. How long were you in business before you realized your salespeople needed permits (which weren't obtained until this week)?
