Consol to Discharge Soon Into Va. River

There are 1 comment on the The Associated Press story from Apr 7, 2007, titled Consol to Discharge Soon Into Va. River . In it, The Associated Press reports that:

“There's not an easy way to remove the chloride”

By early next week, equipment will be in place to enable Consol Energy to pump water with a high chloride content from an underground mine into a southwest Virginia river that is home to an endangered fish species.

State regulators have signed off on the plan, which the company says is necessary to keep one of the region's largest mines open. But opponents fear further harm to a river that has just begun to recover from mining's earlier damage.

Buchanan County officials and others are challenging the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy's decision in court. Read more

" The discharged water must meet Environmental Protection Agency drinking water standards, according to Abbott of the DMME. "

Very little analytical data has been provided so one can assess the case . In the article the mine discharge water was compared to sea water which contains and average of 35,000 mg / l of Total Salts . Now Cl accounts for 55 percent of the Total Salts in sea water . Applying that figure to the mine discharge water one can calculate that the discharge water may contain up to 9,900 mg / l Cl . It would seem that Consol, as well as State regulators are expecting the Levisa River , which they will be contaminating , to dilute the discharge of contaminated brackish water to where it will meet the EPA standards of 250 mg / l Cl . Then, they still have to deal with other contaminants in the discharge such as iron , zinc , copper , lead , manganese and sulfate .

Perhaps the concerned County officials as well as the citizens that obtain their drinking water from this drainage should enlist the aid of the Governor of Montana and Senator M. Bacus . They have recently obtained experience in lobbying federal levels of government on a case involving possible pollution of the Flathead river .
