Tobacco could be banned from all Brunswick Co. facilities

There are 2 comments on the WMBF story from May 4, 2010, titled Tobacco could be banned from all Brunswick Co. facilities. In it, WMBF reports that:

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC Brunswick County commissioners considered snuffing out the use of tobacco on all county property, but instead of voting in a ban on smoking, leaders decided to make changes to the proposed rules.

Designated Smoking Areas are not very useful. There is always some question (in the mind of a smoker) as to just where the area ends, whether the restriction applies to lighting up, butting out, or the entire duration of the time the cigarette is lit.

Add to this the sense of offended legitimacy that comes with the mixed message (Smoking is okay, but we're only going to let you do it here) and the approach becomes unmanageable.

Places where I have seen DSAs, the smokers (if given sufficient freedom from supervision) will actually move any furniture assigned to the area, and then smoke where the furniture is because it is, after all, put there for smoking.

On top of all of this, a DSA that is treated and used as intended results in increased nicotine dependency in the smokers who use it. Some who might otherwise have taken the step and quit are unable to because of the increased nicotine from having so much SHS around, from the increased number of social/olfactory cues (seeing/smelling other people smoking), and from the additional bit of ritual involved in heading to the DSA.

This is definitely not a good approach.

They are provided with an immense Designated Smoking Area. It's called Outside. They get their smokes, we don't have to be a part of it. Win-Win.
