Full story: WTSP Tampa Bay

It brings in $44 million a month, but there appears to be a recurring problem with the SunPass system overcharging customers.

SUNPASS SUCKS!!!

I have a vehicle registered in my name but my fiance also drives the
vehicle using a Sunpass transponder which is in his name. The problem
is the transponder was not deducting the tolls, there was a problem
with it, and he uses it about 3-4 times a day. The surprise was, I
received in my mailbox 12 separate tickets from Broward County and
another 10 from Pam Beach County, a total of 22 citations.

We did receive a few warnings along with actual traffic citations. We
have been going back and forth to the Sunpass Office. At present all
the fees are paid up and nothing pending, but these tickets still
remain on my driving record, when I checked on-line. Now I have to
pay visits to Broward and Palm Beach County Traffic Divisions to
straighten things out, which means plead "Not Guilty" in court. I
have to take time out from work, pay court fees and still have to
deal with the removal of those items. I think that Sunpass should be
able to straighten out those ticket issues with FDOT and not the
motorist. When I went to the office the clerk said that this is
happening very frequently, as a matter of fact the record was a woman
with 92 citations. The person in line before me had 24 citations. I
imagine this is causing a back load of work for state employees as
well as irritated motorists.

This is jeopardizing licences records. Why is this system not
working properly. Why is a system allowed to generate so many
citations to one individual. Have you been familiar with this
complaint from motorists? This is really upsetting. What can I do next?

Please fix this system, if there is zero tolerance then the booths
need to be functioning correctly as well as those transponders.
If these citations are generated then it should not go on a
motorist's record, but first go to the Sunpass office and cleared.

My daughter uses my sunpass in her car and always has....I use auto pay and really havent noticed any charges however my daughter changed jobs and didnt need to use it as much.
We recently found out that she had 13 tickets issued and charged as her sunpass wasnt working and because her tag didnt match the sunpass, she was charged and lost her license for 5 years.....YEP.....5 YEARS....
Turns out she tried to get service on her sunpass through the 800 number but as soon as they discovered she wasnt the account holder, they stopped her and ended the call. When she wasnt responding to the tickets because she had moved twice since they were issued, they looked up her tag number, mailed the tickets and never thought to check her VIN number and see what happened.
Granted, we should have updated the account if we had known....we didnt and it turns out about 90% of the people I have talked to about this didnt know either....however...my thought is that if they can look up the tag and find her address why couldnt they run the VIN number and double check to see if maybe that might be an issue. THese people are so quick to issue tickets on a dead battery or whatever but they wont take the extra second to double check themselves.
I paid her tickets because she couldnt afford to and it was a birthday surprise....but...do to the Privacy Act, the DMV would only tell me the amount and not what the tickets were for! Sooo....when I paid the tickets, I ADMITTED GUILTY and in turn the judge sentenced her to 5 years suspended license.....because she was considered a habitual offender and when I paid the tickets, it assessed 27 points to her license in less than a 12 month period so she was charged as an habitual offender! UNBELIEVABLE....she had to pay $3000 in fines, attend 4 different classes though the DMV, probabtion for 6 months AND 80 hours community service....all for $7.25 in tolls on an account that had $22.80 available since January 2008 and was never told that it wasnt being charged....anyone have any ideas on what to do about this???

So the overall "stench" I gather from this--as with virtually ALL .gov programs--is that state employees have NO INCENTIVE to quickly rectify obvious glitches, in an EFFICIENT, STREAMLINED manner, because (*ta-DAH!*), the "backlog" JUSTIFIES THEIR OVERPAID PENSION-FROM-YOUR-POCKET jobs!(The more YOUR life is turned upside down, your reputation ruined, the more "necessary" their dept. becomes! OMFG!)

That's the PERVERSE INCENTIVE inherent in ALL gov't jobs--i.e. the WORSE they do their jobs, the more "necessary" their jobs are... HELLO! Thus the various bureaucracies ALWAYS grow in employees and budget size... like a CANCER.

Not to mention the obvious BIG BROTHER PRIVACY issues with Sunpass. WTH? Why do they need to know your name, tag #, etc.? As long as the xponder is paid up, and Sunpass is getting their money, what do they care WHICH VEHICLE the transponder is in? They still have the high-speed cameras to ID those who do NOT pay.

I'm saying those who DO pay, should be anonymous. If my (anonymous, NOT linked to my name or car) Sunpass is working properly, Big Brother should NOT be able to track my movements via their database. The sensors detect a 2-axle car, the $$ are deducted, and the state thus has NO LEGITIMATE NEED to know my name, DOB, tag #, or ANY identifying info, they GOT THEIR TOLL... am I missing something?

Sunpass automatically entered my credit card into autopay WITHOUT my permission. Today, they withdrew $20 from my account and caused my checking account to overdraw.

They refused to acknowledge the problem and refused to cancel the autopay. I cancelled my account and demanded an immediate refund.

They were happy to cancel a 8 year customer and said it would take 7 - 10 business days to refund the money.

I am going to get an E-pass today.

It's been two years since the last post and nothing has been done about the scary power that Sunpass has and the way they negligently go about throwing that power around!! You think that it won't happen to you, but it can, and eventually it will! My son bought a new vehicle last August and put the transponder in it. It had the temporary dealer plate. He was never notified of any fees due by Sunpass. They wrote citations and opened four court cases in Miami-Dade and the case grew legs of its own with no due process whatsoever. The only notification he received was from the DMV (funny they were able to find him at the same address he's resided for four years when Sunpass apparently couldn't) that in a week, his license was going to be suspended if he didn't pay almost $700.00!! One week to correct the problem. Sunpass has refused to dismiss the citation even though they are the issuing agency. No way to reach the clerk's office to set a hearing before the suspension and Sunpass knows that. My only option to keep his license from being suspended at this moment is to pay the $700.00 ransom. And Sunpass knows that too!!
After this fiasco, he will be tossing his Sunpass in the garbage where it belongs. I think I will too!

Florida, WAY TOO MANY of its LEO and way too many others are people you wouldn't recognize anymore or talk to in public. They're a corrupt embarrassment and the few good decent men and women left are terribly outnumbered.

Anyone could see the problem with the sunpass RIGHT AWAY.

Thats why they brought it HERE. To own you and your license. Sillies.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it! We had a pretty mild winter this year, just like most of the country.

Haven't been trolling on the Chicago sites much anymore. Created enough hate and discontent there. Seems like everywhere.

Maybe, but illegally? Nah, it's a public forum and it's all opinion. Never threatened anyone.

Since it's an opinion forum, ya gotta have a thick skin, be ready for any and everything.

So go jump off the SkyWay

No. Thank you for making my point. There is no legal way to harass innocents. But searching corrupt LEO in SRQ area sure brought up some interesting stuff. Like the Murray Cohen MURDER by LE.

Isn't it kinda interesting how in the stalking thread I discuss how deputies (that old regional feel to it) are illegally following me and harassing my family because they are county thieves and trash bikers and thugs and then deputy dog comes in and picks up a THREE YEAR OLD comment from "liner" in order to have his name right by my thread and here comes "liner" right back in there.

I don't think deputy quite has the statutory definition of "threatening" down.

Following someone online is also threatening. But that's cool. I'm used to it but that doesn't make it less a crime.

Read the statutes.

Honest. They apply to you, too !! I know y'all have forgotten that but it's true, they do apply to you.

Lovely Sunpass sent me to collections WITHOUT any warnings. They STATE that they mailed out 3 warning letters to my correct address that I have on my account, yet NONE of them made it to me. Funny, huh? So I just had to pay some $40 bill that they wouldn't explain to me over the phone because it was already sent to collections and the Customer Service rep talked to me as if I was a delinquent person. I've never been sent to collections before for anything. Sunpass is terrible and the transponders never work correctly anyways.

I've spent some time in FL and haven't really seen a reason to get a Sunpass. Once in a great while if I need to go across The Alley, I just pay the 75cents or whatever it was. Florida Turnpike? I use 95, what's the difference?
