There are 482 comments on the browardnewsnetwork.blogspot.com story from Jan 27, 2013, titled Corruption At Manatee Bay Elementary in Weston Fla.. In it, browardnewsnetwork.blogspot.com reports that:

Parents have notified the Broward County School Police of the corruption in Manatee Bay Elementary in Weston Fla. The PTA and the Principal send a letter Sept 2012 that they no longer would do catalog sales that they would do the duck donations parents that would donate $50 the kids would go to a mega party, parents that would donate $100 kids would go to a mega party. It is illegal to exclude kids because the parents cannot afford to donate $100 and the principal was advised that parents where not happy about it and she promised the parents that she would include all the children. Oct 31,2012 Manatee Bay had the Mega party it was during school hours and ONLY the children that paid $100 where allow to go to the cafeteria and enjoy the party with the Miami Heat getting souvenirs, pizza and dance. The kids that parents send cash did not get invited since any cash that goes into Manatee Bay disappears. That is DISCRIMINATION, what do we want to teach our children? that ONLY the children that parents have money can go to parties and enjoy the school? do we want the kids to be separated the rich kids and the poor kids they have to be punish because the parents cannot afford to donate $100 is that a good example?

You are right in the USA you are innocent until proven guilty, but any investigation they remove the person so they can do the investigation the proper way not allow the person to stay there and try to clean up the act. Besides we have kids in the school and we know how she is, yes she is caring in front of the people but once you tell her anything she will attack you. I have a special need child and we asked her for the ramp they promised us that they would put the ramp and because we asked her she started attacking us.

Why are all the comments written with terrible grammar?
Does this school have an assistant principal? Why isn't she being called out on any of this? Isn't there a bookkeeper and secretary that sign off on all of this?
Don't they consistently have high test scores? Is there anything right about this school? Why are you going on a blog if you are truly interested in "helping"? Shouldn't you go to her boss? What exactly are you hoping to achieve by bashing the school? Anyone who truly cared about the school would go to her boss. This makes the teachers, staff and everything look bad. Was that your plan?
My sense is that somebody did in fact approach her boss. Subsequent to that meeting with her boss, the Superintendent most likely ordered the audit that is currently ongoing at the school.

Dear Mr. Mills -
No, I do not want to teach my children that 'rich kids should be separated from poor kids'. Nor do I wish for them to think that public slander is an acceptable or productive form of communication.
Your accusations have only succeeded in disheartening many dedicated volunteers and staff who sacrifice countless hours for the benefit of the ENTIRE Manatee Bay Elementary community.
My son did not attend the mega party either but he sure has benefitted from using new computers, Meet the Masters, Math Superstars, Scholastic News and countless other programs and activities that the mega party funds helped generate.
Thank you, PTA, keep up the good work and please ignore the conspiracy theorists.

Parent get your FACTS clear. Computers came from the DISTRICT NOT FROM MANATEE BAY. The mega money funds are paying volunteers to do pullout reading and pay the PTA board. A PTA member stated to me" we get paid to be in the PTA board" and you get $400.00 so please STOP lying.

I feel that the most proactive approach to uncover the facts in this case is to wait until the audit is completed. At that time we should all seek to obtain a copy of this audit as it is public record. Then we will have the opportunity to read in detail all of the information that has been documented. In this way, we shall have the facts only. This should clear up and dispel any untruths as well.

I have 2 daughters 2nd and 5th grade I personally dislike the principal because of some incidents we had with her and the way she treated my daughter, but my wife is friends with a PTA board member and she told my wife that there is corruption that Katie stole a lot of money and that the principal knew about it. As a matter of fact the PTA board member told my wife that last year the auditors went to school and Mrs DeVaughn cover Katie and that the Kindergarten teacher that is the principal's friend that she moved to be with the PTA or she has her as a "special teacher" is also involved in the corruption.

These comments about the Manatee Bay principal are obviously written by someone who has a personal problem with the school. There is no substance to the charges and the additional comments from "other parents" all seem to be written by the same person. These comments should be completely ignored unless this person wants to file formal charges backed up by legitimate evidence of wrongdoing. Who is this Ron Mills? Why are all of the other articles written by him written in much better English? Obviously, there is something very strange going on here.

As the parent of a 1st grader, I wholeheartedly support our PTA and our Principal, Ms. DeVaughn. Thank you PTA for everything you have done and the many things you have raised for our school. I can't believe I am reading such slanderous comments, and such a rush to judgement from people who don't have any clue what is going on. I honestly think many of the negative comments are from disgruntled parents who are upset that Ms. Devaughn does not let them get their way on everything and who enforces discipline.

These comments are so petty and mean-spirited, and generally show a real lack of class. If there is an audit going on, then the truth will out, as they say. If there is corruption, I, of course, want to know, but will wait for the authorities to suss it all out. In the meantime, dragging people's names and reputations through the mud shows these people (or person) for the gossip-mongerers they are. Try getting some real facts straight, such as ASP does pay a portion back to the school, but so does EVERY aftercare provider. Schools don't give out that space for free. It's not a "kick back". The previous aftercare provider was subpar, with no special classes or programs. ASP has a very good reputation and is used at other Weston schools, as well. Every fundraiser, including the catalog fundraisers used at every school, provide prizes and parties for students depending on their sales. My daughter has never attended these parties either, but I'm not out here whining and complaining or trying to destroy people. A second Heat party has been planned for all students for months now, so that sounds to me like the principal did hear parents' concerns. Most of the Club 205 classes are run by teachers from the school, so to claim they are violating the Jessica Lunsford Act seems a stretch. You've "heard that teachers and parents can't stand the principal"? Was there a poll that I missed? Did you ask every single teacher and parent or is this just more gossip that you "heard" and feel compelled to spread? As I said earlier, if there really has been corruption, then let the proof speak for itself, cause all that is going on here is a bunch of unsubstantiated mud-slinging.

ASP gives kickbacks to the principal so they can get in the school. Everyone knows this, nothing new. For you to defend them shows us how clueless you are toward the entire corruption. Private companies were not cleared and did not have badges, that is a violation of the Jessica Lungsford Act.There were the two private companies in the clubs.
All of us can't stand the principal but we are really good fakers or else she will write us up. Nobody with a conscious can possibly like her since she steals from children.
The second heat party is for the FCAT assemblies not for the donations they did before. They are just trying to cover it up. We are not dumb.
Since she arrived, we have private donation instead of fundraisers, we charge students for FCAT camps, Katie Dowe changed the tenure of President and that was illegal, it had to be approved by PTA National. And the list goes on and on.

Now we find the Head Custodian drinking on the job. She should be fired as well!

Maybe those running certain events are pocketing the money? If so how would the Principle know? Who checks the accounting for Club 205 and other events? How many parents pay with cash?
The principal is in charge of her entire school and responsible for any monies collected whether PTA or not. Another thing mentioned, why are our field trips so expensive and they are not in other schools? Who is keeping the money?

The principal and the PTA president were always behind close doors with money on her desk.

Please explain what PTA has raised for our school?
The principal has only destroyed our school and allowed PTA to steal from our students. How kind and thoughtful of them!!! Why don't they resign if they are really not stealing??? They don't want to give up the money.

Talk to the staff at her other school Lauderdale Manor and they can tell her how awful the principal was to them. They were so happy to see her go. They don't even come by to visit her that's how much they despised her. So they dump her on us, great!
But we are hopeful her true colors will come out and she will be charge for stealing money from students. Shameful!

The Assistant Principal nor the secretary have the authority to approve any event nor be in charge of any monies.
The bookkeeper has told the principal many times that what she was doing was wrong but the principal doesn't listen to anyone but herself.

I have a 2nd grade boy I have been in the school for two years and I have so much problems with my son in that school. Every time I try to make an appointment with the principal they alway give me the run around. Her secretary believes that she is god and always looks down at the parents. I am from Venezuela so my English is not so good and I went to talk to the principal to tell her that $50 for ice cream party was to much and $100 I could not give my son and she said that she was sorry but they had the rules and that if a child didn't bring money they could not go to the party. I gave $25 and my son did not go to any party. The teacher asked the class to buy him paper ink also to clean the hands that the school has no money so where did the money that they got go, they have a lady in the cafeteria with white hair very skinny and she always screams at my son and I told the principal and then they told me that the principal covers her group that steals and that is why the principal did not do anything. It is embarrassing that she is still there the principal when she doesn't care about our sons or daughters
I am glad you share your comments because some people are never there and don't have a clue of what this principal does to children and to parents. With our help, she'll be gone soon.

Strange how the person who is calling himself or herself Staff writes with the exact same grammatical style and mudslinging as the earlier posts with other names. A person on staff would know that the principal is now in her 3rd year, and that this was the first time a straight donation was asked for instead of catalog sales. Notification for the 2nd Heat party went home after the first one and was scheduled to be within a few weeks, but got pushed back - so it originally had NOTHING to do with FCAT. I assume a person on "STAFF" would know that. A person on STAFF would know the many items that are paid for through PTA dollars - ELMOs, LCD projectors, Scholastic News, etc. if there was corruption, my guess would be someone would have been skimming off the top - to suggest that the MANY people you keep dragging in by name are just pocketing all if it in the hopes no one would notice is just stupid. "Why don't they resign if they are really not stealing?" Really, you are suggesting that people who are innocent should resign? Why? Because YOU don't like them? I seriously doubt that a staff member would have written a dumb statement like that one. I am sure there are parents and teachers who dislike the principal. Nobody is liked by everyone. Finally, I also seriously doubt that a staff member would be involved in tearing their school apart and making it look as awful as you seem so intent on doing - A school that is among the top 5 public schools in the county, in the top schools in the nation for 1st in Math, that has supportive parents who volunteer their time in the classrooms everyday, and a terrific, dedicated staff. This whole thread has become a joke - throwing poop at the wall and hoping something sticks.
