Corruption At Manatee Bay Elementary in Weston Fla.

Jan 27, 2013 | Posted by: browardnews | Full story: browardnewsnetwork.blogspot.com

Parents have notified the Broward County School Police of the corruption in Manatee Bay Elementary in Weston Fla. The PTA and the Principal send a letter Sept 2012 that they no longer would do catalog sales that they would do the duck donations parents that would donate $50 the kids would go to a mega party, parents that would donate $100 kids would go to a mega party. It is illegal to exclude kids because the parents cannot afford to donate $100 and the principal was advised that parents where not happy about it and she promised the parents that she would include all the children. Oct 31,2012 Manatee Bay had the Mega party it was during school hours and ONLY the children that paid $100 where allow to go to the cafeteria and enjoy the party with the Miami Heat getting souvenirs, pizza and dance. The kids that parents send cash did not get invited since any cash that goes into Manatee Bay disappears. That is DISCRIMINATION, what do we want to teach our children? that ONLY the children that parents have money can go to parties and enjoy the school? do we want the kids to be separated the rich kids and the poor kids they have to be punish because the parents cannot afford to donate $100 is that a good example?

So there were 6 schools with audit exceptions in the most recent report, Manatee Bay being one. According to page 3, there was ONE finding against MBE, and that was with the handling of some PTA activities. Audit notes the Office of Auditors actually have NO jurisdiction over PTA, but MBE's PTA was cooperative and WILLINGLY allowed review of their practices and books in order to be transparent.

So, what did the audit find? They "could not substantiate any allegations pertaining to missing funds, missing documents, or other questionable transactions" directed against PTA members, teachers, afterschool providers, or the current principal. You know - the original allegations that all you "We knew it!" types were crowing about. Audit also specifically states they have ZERO interest in getting involved in conflicts that are (obviously) of a personal nature.

Instead, the audit found some relatively minor issues (things like PTA receipting, incomplete record keeping on make-up times, and the running of separate clubs and aftercare programs). They have given recommendations for how to improve in future. Note - none suggest firing the principal, closing the PTA or jailing its members, or the firing or loss of licenses for teachers. Why? Because this whole thing has been an overblown witch hunt by a FEW disgruntled parents/staff members who have bullied the school all year in an attempt to get their way.

So what will the final result be? I fear the loss of the afterschool clubs, which is a blow for the kids who enjoyed doing them with their friends and for all us parents who signed our kids up for things like dance, karate, double dutch, environmental, and cooking because it was CONVENIENT and no more expensive than picking up the kids and driving them to another location. What makes it more disheartening is that I know for a FACT from talking to parents and teachers that other schools have similar systems (including in Weston). I wonder if those schools will have to close their clubs, or if they will just be allowed up continue to operate since they don't have a bitter minority willing to tear down a top-notch school because they don't like the Jamaican principal.

I really would love to know what started this whole thing, as the audit states this was undertaken at the request of these people. Did someone get a bad evaluation from the principal? Did she refuse a parent request for something? What was the underlying factor? Because after reading all the various disparaging, libelous, often racists posts - there was obviously something else at play. Something that read an awful lot like sour grapes.

Bina lost pure and simple- she tries to tear schools and communities apart. She was the original complaintant. She is finally being figured out! The Audit finding is much ado about absolutely nothing!

My dear, you need to read the audit a few more times. There are many aspects of it that you missed in your summary here. Although you write well, there is a great deal of missing information that you have failed to include in your critique.

You mean the part about personal issues with "certain parents and staff" and the principal and the auditor not wanting to be involved? That would be Bina and the AP- the auditors saw through that- as do almost everyone now. And Devon is clearly Bina herself- who else writes "I am not worry"? Only Bina.

Or the part about no substantiated facts to warrant "wrongdoing"? Paperwork mistakes, PTA payments to themselves have nothing to do with Binas original charges- keep throwing mud until something sticks won't work here.

Please indicate what missing information would have changed my two main points? The audit says that it could find no substantiation of any of the original charges leveled against members of MBE's staff. The recommendations do not reflect the wishes of the group of bullies, which included the transfer or firing of the principal, the closing of the PTA and the jailing of certain members, and the loss of licenses of teachers (especially if they supported the principal). If there is anything in the audit that disputes those points, please enlighten us. It's easy to patronize the quality of my "critique", while actually giving nothing but a general statement and ZERO information yourself.

None of those things were part of the original allegations against the principal. They were incidental matters brought up during the course of the investigation that were not handled correctly, or could have been handled better. The audit recommendations clearly indicate that the auditors do not think any corruption or deviousness was going on. But now that the County has not followed your lead, you just add them to your list of the corrupt. Must be a nice place to live where everyone must agree with you, or they are corrupt. And then, to add to the ridiculousness, you compare the whole situation to Cuba? Have we entered Bizarro World?
Now, I have a question for you. What are your thoughts about a staff member who participates in a blog to accuse other staff members of all kinds of things, badmouths in print and by name any who disagree with her, participates or sits silently by while racist comments are leveled at her fellow staff members, all while hiding anonymously? I'll tell you my thoughts - this staff member is unprofessional and unethical. She is acting like a petulant teenager. Someone who had the courage of her convictions would be standing up for something she thought was right, not hiding behind a blog while smiling at her fellow staff members the next day. Scared of retribution? That's just an excuse. I have met numerous teachers and administrators who were willing to stand up and do the right thing. They went through proper channels and knew that protections were in place to prevent retribution. This person's actions throughout this whole affair have only indicated that she has something to hide. Even if not true, her actions towards her fellow staff members on this blog have been reprehensible and inexcusable. The whole thing is quite sad, really.
Here, Here! We have a good idea of who this person is and she needs to leave.

She had help from within, who then got her buddies from within (who for whatever reason believe everything that comes out of her mouth) and a few parents, and now they all lose!

I don't agree that this entire audit is much ado about nothing. Incidentally , neither did the members of the audit committee. There is a new article from the audit committee meeting that took place on June 20, 2013 at the district. The audit committee members are appointed by the School Board Members.
Read the article from the Sun Sentinel from June 21, 2013. I am not happy that these things occurred either, but I do not think the correct response is to deny that any wrongdoing took place.
One of the committee members said it best when quoted in a former article she stated that denying the facts and attacking the messenger will not change the facts.

Responding to the audit, Manatee Bay Principal Heather Hedman-DeVaughn wrote: "Teachers will be reminded that they are not permitted to have their own students in any club or social activity conducted on or off campus ."
Who does she want to fool ? she have been allowing this to happen at Manatee Bay for years. Room parents , parents and their children socializing with their own teachers off campus in exchange for special treatment or just to be in the spot light for few minutes or just to help them cover up for their wrong doing..… Please !!!.. We are not blind..!!! Don’t insult our intelligence…!!!!

Wow...my family lives in Texas and chances are very good that we will be moving to your area by the end of this year. Reading all of this definitely makes me want to look even more closely into the choices of elementary schools and where we will eventually call home. I have 2 in elementary and 1 in high school and have always been an involved volunteer and PTO board member for the last 4-5 years. I have enjoyed every moment of being there for my kids and being able to help our school out. This all seems so foreign and crazy to me...

This is precisely why this blog irks me so much. This small group of bullies has tried to destroy the reputation of our school and its staff because of a personal vendetta. They come on here and post under a bunch of different names to make their group look bigger than it is. They have made all sorts of accusations and racist comments, but read the audit...it does not back up their claims..

Moving Soon, you do not need to be scared to put your kids into our school. We are a Top 5 Broward County school. We are #1 in the Nation for First in Math. We have students who are honored in music, social studies, and science. We have exceptional teachers, many of whom stay hours past "quitting time" to design the best lessons and curriculum for the kids. We have a phenomenal Drama Club. We have dedicated volunteers who come in day after day to help in any way they can. I have children of my own. I have absolutely refused my husband's requests to move away, because there is NO WAY I would pull my kids out of this school. Please, do not let this small group taint your views. If and when you do move, tour the school. Talk to parents. You'll hear a very different story than what this group has tried to present.

Thanks! Makes me feel better, I do understand about those few who get upset and blow things up. When we take our trip out there to check out the area I definately plan to tour a couple of elementary schools and feeder pattern schools...High School important too since my son will be in his sophomore year.

Public record shows this principal was on a discipline plan and was put in our school to cover her up.

All of you should check this out so you can see she has done it before.

You don't know what you are talking about. This principal has taken fundraisers for her own benefit and is putting the blame on PTA and staff. It was her own doing.

She did it before in her other school Lauderdale Manors and was put on a discipline plan.

Why don't you investigate and start defending your child instead of someone that is stealing from our schools.

And we all recommend you check her record for she is blaming the PTA to get herself out of this mess.
She has previous records. Check her bank accounts and you will see.

She blames PTA and the staff for money missing.

Now that the audit is public record we can clearly see that this principal put the blame on PTA and the teachers.
Never ones did she take ownership of what happened even though she was the one involved in the scam.
We hope PTA now realizes how she lies and pretends and then stabs people on their backs.
She is like Cybill with 16 different personalities. Scary that some like this is near kids.
I'm glad my children are out of that school.
