I would imagine whatever was done was not reported by the youngmen being initiated. Most of the time it is the father who does not like there young being humiliation and takes it to the adminitration and not the coach. And as for those of you making the male on male assumptions you need to grow-up or keep your childish opions to yourself.

It is amazing! Wrestling as a sport gets no coverage around here until something like this happens.

This is completely f-ed up!!!! I bet if it was the football team the administration would have looked the other way. All the guys on the team need to stick together and continue the season off of school property in somebody's backyard or in a parking lot.
That's a good way for them to get arrested! We have no idea what they did and it doesn't sound like the School Board wants to disclose what they did.

heard it straight from a wrestler: freshman (i dont know if it was just one or multiple) was hogtied in the gym, somebody videotaped it and put it on youtube, a parent saw it & asked coach to take action
but this is done EVERY YEAR to the new wrestlers and the students it was done to had no qualms regarding the matter... it was the parent

My son was one of those suspended because you could see the back of his head on the video, they charged him with "hazing" which he'd never heard of (before this)and is mentioned no where in the Clay County code of conduct. Now, I see the school board is calling it an initiation because they don't want to look bad; they've had enough negative media attention. It was an initiation which is done every year to the freshmen wrestlers; worse, the team did not even come forward and accept responsibility. They let 4 guys take the fall for the entire team.

Maybe it is being kept quiet because the father of one of the young men involved is running for sheriff. They knew the behavior was wrong - just another example of typical fleming behavior. Hide, deny - but God forbid - never take responsibility. Where was the coach? Why didn't he immediately report the behavior? Because I am sure someone in authority over him would want to know why students were unsupervised. Hazing doesn't have to be in the Code of Conduct - it is against the law. This was not a case of men acting like men...it was boys being idiots!

Sounds like boys being boys. Initiations are a rite of passage of many sports teams, clubs, frats, sorrorities etc.

The kids involved made a bad choice and the whole wrestling program shouldn't be punished for the act involved. The coach at Fleming Island runs a great program and cares about the kids. I suggest to the Clay school board to take a rest until January with the program, allow kids not involved to practice, and get on with the program They are a good class program that represents Clay County schools to the utmost. Keep the coach and press on. Also, evaluate the punishment of the ones involved and issue a fair punishment. If they allow the program to be dropped the allow the students who werent involved be allowed to transfer schools after permission from the FHSAA is received. Lastly, the kids made a bad choice Let's move on.

You should not say the team did not come forward because several kids and parents came forward. Some people have a different definition of involvment being a witness to the event does not make you part of it. There are a group of kids that are being penalized by taking away there wrestling season when they had nothing to do with the event.

That's right, parent -- don't, for a single minute, consider that your precious little angel was doing something wrong.

this has been going on for years and will continue to happen. All this is going to do is push it off campus and more underground which could lead to more serious problems ... lighten up!!!

I think the decision to suspend the Wrestling Program for 2007-08 is just. Its inhumane to perfome "HAZING" on the newbee's, but to video tape and air it on YouTube is humiliation. The schools is totally responsibile. I'm really surprised that the parents of these four boys are not seeking a law suit against the school. Also, it brings everything full circle that horrible things can...and do happen in the "better parts of town".

I can agree with one of the previous post that there is vague reporting. However we must consider that they are talking about minors.
I think that it is easy for people to cast stones at others who make poor decions and those that are victims. I know what happened and I found it appalling that this so called "initiation" took place. It is easy for all to "arm chair quarterback" the parents of the victim when their son was not the one that was "initiated", had it video taped and placed on the internet for the world to see.
Let it be known that it happened to all the freshman and all upper classmen participated.
It is not right/nor fair that 4 young men have to take all of the punishment.
As for as the season being suspended that is yet to be decieded. The team was given the opotion of telling the truth and getting back on the matt by Jan 1st or lose their season. I guess it boils down to these young men admitting to what happened and getting past it.
Let's all hope that the future of our world makes the right choice.

One of the 4 kids that was involved stated that all the kids were involved but I know that they were not. I talked to a couple of the 4 and they said all of the wrestlers were not involved. Also there was more than 4 kids held accountable for there actions. you stated that all the kids were involved how do you know this? Were you in the room when it happened or are you taking what a paerent told you?
