I wonder if any of the members of the White family are now embarassed, after seeing themselves on television. I'm sure that some of them are as proud as peacocks of themselves. Just maybe though, some of them will reflect on how they are living and seek a better life for themselves. If the documentary spurs even one, and hopefully more than one, of the children to break the previous cycle and excel/escape to a better life then the show is a good thing.

I was born & raised in Boone county. I must say, I was afraid of watching due to the embarrassment I thought I would feel. Turns out, I left the theatre feeling sad.:( my father currently lives in Boone Co. And is a pill addict as well. There are absolutely NO resources there to educate about or assist in treating addiction. The closest facilities would be kanawha or Logan. Both are 45 minutes away. If you know anything about this, then you know young have to be at the clinic almost daily. Whichever I agree, not too far to save yourself, but in the eyes of an addict, its muto easier to continue down the same path of getting high & committing a slow suicide.
However, I feel the embarrassment should lie in the hands if the doctor as well as the government. For example, Dr Dawson was my fathers Dr & his monthly Rx was: 140 oxy 15's, 140 tab 10's, 140 Xanax, 70 SOMA, ibprophren 800 & some stomach meds. He has NO TERMINAL illness nor does he has any real diagnosis aside from "back&knee" pain. Yet, he was able to get that lethal concoction monthly?! The government, and MINE AND YOUR TAX dollars paid treatment BC he is on disability due to a legit injury at work, whichever explains back&knee pain. However, the treatment for addiction IS NOT covered just the same! So in my opinion...the whites are not the embarrassment, they are just a product of their surroundings and the flawed system, which they have been outsmarting since they can remember.
I know what its like to be addicted the pain killers,my doctor handed them out like candy after i had neck surgery,i was on them for a year,i was on morphine and oxycodine, but since god made us a little smarter then an ape i knew i couldnt keep taking them, and they should know better also, but for the life of me i dont know of ANY doctor that perscribes gasoline or glue or cocaine or meth.
They bring this crap on themselves,i dont feel sorry for them not one second, there dumb as dirt dont have to be a rocket scientist to know if you put your hand in a fire your going to get burnt.they do stupid crap and then blame the world, they act like a bunch of little kids,if they dont get their way they go get f'd up on drugs and booze, they want the goverment to take care of them ?then lock them all up and take their kids.this is what happens when your sister is your mother, lmao.

I've been on pain killers for 20 years. When I was a teenager I was diagnosed with a rare pain disorder nick named the suicide disease. I thought I was loosing my mind I was in so much pain. After the dr's figured out what was wrong with me I had several brain surgeries to try and correct the problem. They did help but I was still in so much pain I couldn't get out of bed some days. My dr's told me to take narcotics and I refused. I finally gave in and my life started to change, I'm not saying it was a cure but at least I had my life back. I have never felt addicted to them but I do worry about long term use. When my pain dies down in the summer months I quit taking them, but it always returns. I don't blame people who come addicted to pain killers I blame the dr. I couldn't work before I started using pain killers, now I have a good job and raised a family. These drugs are misused more than they help people like myself. That's sad!

I view this family as a modern day moonshiner family. My family is from NC and I am proud to have "hillbilly" in my immediate bloodline. Things are not as simple to change as you believe they are. Unfortunately, drugs have invaded this family as a way of entertainment as well as income. Same as shine did before. I will not call them trash or inbred or embarrassing. I can only hope that the new generations break the cycle of addictions.

The thing that hit me hardest in the film...(it's been about a year, so my memory might be a bit foggy), was the man, I think he was a lawyer, who compared the people of Boone County to people in a Third World country, and as he was saying that, there was a film of some sort of "Coal Pride" parade, and people on floats were throwing candy down into the street so the ragged little children could paw in the dirt for it. As if they were just garbage. And the adults were allowing them to do it. They don't even know when they are being degraded and humiliated.

It really made me sad. The man who made the "3rd world" remark was right. I come from people who act just like the Whites and worse. It makes me sad. In my family...there's no good in them. I can't have anything to do with them. They'd kill you as soon as look at you. My family really is just trash and dangerous trash to boot. People who call that just "being country" or a "culture" don't know a damn thing about it. I keep what I come from a secret, and tell no one...and I read the names of my kin in the obituaries, and that's how I know who's still alive.

It's the 21st Century and WV kids still commonly have worms, fetal alcohol syndrome, malnourishment...calling that "part of 'Mountain Culture'" just condemns more to suffer. This whole state should be ashamed that someone can even FIND people like that here to film.

Like it or not the White family is the only reason people away from that area know that Boone County WV even exists. I am from KY and have lived all over the country. The Whites are the only thing people outside of your immediate area know about Boone county. Regardless of what "good" things may exist there or whatever other social contributions that area may claim nobody away from there even hears your claims. Even if they did hear them nobody cares. The Whites are a modern day hillbilly freak show and it intrigues the rest of the country. I think some good will come from all the adverse attention some day but for now (just like the past decade or more) y'all are going to have to grin and accept it. We have families like that here as well. The only difference is our versions of the Whites are only noticed by the police, courts, and social services. The national media has not decided to make them the poster child for hick white (no pun intended) trash. All in all I like to watch the shows about them. They are interesting, sad, and funny. They also resonate because I know a bunch of families just like them. I can observe them without getting involved and in danger. I have always wondered about the local families that are like them but knew to keep my distance because of the trouble they would bring. With all the film covering the Whites I can see in without getting sucked in to all the drama and illegalities. Then again I am a psych major of deviant personalities have always fascinated me. Don't worry about stereotypes either. To the world at large the Whites are the only people in Boone county. Not being rude but the rest of you simply don't exist. That should be more of a relief than an insult.

That shit is in practically every county in the U.S. Every town has a group or family that's that f-ed up. It's like someone said earlier. The system in place is failing and people need to be held accountable for their actions. Unfortunately most of these people who contribute nothing to the betterment of society end up dying prematurely and it's sad. But that's's called natural selection. I have a lot of relatives from that region and I think the lack of industry and jobs creates an ongoing depression which cultivates an environment for black-market behaviors and attitudes. I love the appalachian culture and the people are very warm and welcoming. It's such a shame.
