Full story: Sedalia Democrat

We'd get more accomplished if we study the facts first. Nearly 40 people met Saturday night to discuss the possible health and environmental problems that more chicken barns in Benton County would cause. via Sedalia Democrat

New factory farm to open in Missouri
Date: August 26, 6:36pm
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources recently issued an operating permit for a new 65,600-capacity chicken CAFO to be located just a mile from Roaring River State Park in Missouri. The permit was issued to Michelle and Rodney Ozbun.

Just wanted to clarify something from the last meeting. We do not to outlaw or do away with any CAFOs already in existance. We simply want to have some form of legislation or regulations that will give citizens of the county a say in WHERE a CAFO can be built or HOW many can be built in a certain area.

The northern part of the county is tired of unregulated building of CAFOs. Now we need to get the rest of the county involved.

Maybe we should take our PROBLEM out of the hands of the people who are supposed to work for us. When we elect people to offices, they should LISTEN to what we have to say. VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE.......

Its time for some new ideas on the County Commission. We have four candidates for the north side. The county has pretty much went backwards the last 15 years. Roads, ditches, bridges, wages, and employee benefits are all below acceptable standards. The Capital Improvements Sales tax fund has pretty much been turned into the incumbent Commissioners reelection fund. Yes political gain is alive and well in Benton County. The decisions by commissioners of where goods and services are purchased and from whom, as well as the commissioners future and past road improvement plans and scheduling appear to be for areas and individuals where commissioners support is heaviest.

The 911 fund in Benton County is/was also used in the same manner. Was it was money from the 911 fund that was used to purchase the Stowe Building? If you remember, during the eletion of 2004 at least one incumbent Commisioner used the new 911 road naming process to leverage votes by changing chosen road names to satisfy potential voters requests. This was done against the advice of the local fire, ambulance, and other emergency personel who were appointed to the road naming committees. This practice also went against the guidelines provided to the committee that are to be used by all counties when naming roads for 911 services. The actions of this self serving commissioner allowed his constituents to leverage their road naming wishes by simply threatening to vote for someone else unless the changes were agreed to. This was done after the original names were approved and the road signs were printed. Useless wasteful spending of taxpayer money for political gain.

I too think it is time for changes. Lets get some people who will listen too and act for the residents of the county. Let's get back to doing for the people.
Someone told me that the commissioners didn't see a problem with keeping all the CAFOs in one area. I replied "That's because it isn't happening in their areas". New officials is a step forward.

The citizens of the north side need to show the present commissioner the door. If reelected he'll have his hand picked successor holding on to his shirtail come election time in four years. We don't need a new face with the same old ideas. Some swift changes are needed immediately this year to catch the north side of Benton County up with the 21st century. Incumbents are hard to beat. The present day North Side Commissioner was first elected by holding on to the retiring commissioners shirttail. A lot of us were guilty of being on that bandwagon. It didn't take long to see what a mistake that was. We're still paying the price years later. As outlined above he has built a pretty solid foundation of supporters at taxpayer expense. The time to start campaigning is now. Get the word out. Don't feel guilty or sorrowful for the incumbent. He has paid himself a nice salary while in office and has had a generous expense account from which to draw also, and will receive retirement benefits for life as a result of all his hard work and the sacrifices he's made to be a commissioner. Not only can Benton County not afford four more years of ideas that are stale we can't take the chance on another shirtttail election in four more years that yeilds another bum. There are two new faces on the ballot this year. Either could not be any worse than what we have.

We need to research our options and decide who the best of four candidates will be. I met recently with one of the candidates and was very impressed. If only we can count on them to listen, and act in our behalf not their own agenda.

I'm running for eastern commissioner here in pettis county and the existing commissioner are CAFO members and if elected for another four years we could see CAFO
growing here in pettis county and the indpendent family farmer slowely push out.

Below are just a few of the web site addresses and the articles within those web sites that condemn CAFO’s – and display reason for that condemnation. Whomever is embracing CAFO’s are doing it strictly for money – without one single iota of giving a damn about people’s health or well being. Read them – because you’re going to need this information sometime in the future when the topic of CAFO comes up for discussion. These CAFO advocates must be stopped – no matter if they are Democrats, Republicans or Independents … and the vast majority of the general public that are not affiliated with the raising of livestock are going to support whatever candidate stands up for what is right. If you keep that in mind, and openly oppose CAFO’s it’ll help you win this election.

Here’s the website addresses and articles they represent:

http://www.ncrlc.com/CAFO_02.html

http://www.nomadcocafo.com/node...

http://www.iaenvironment.org/archivespdf/q_20... …(this is a pdf file, you’ll need Adobe Acrobat to read it)

http://www.waterkeeper.org/mainarticledetails...

http://www.epa.gov/oig/reports/1997/hogchp3.h... ...(this one is directly from the Environmental Protection Agency – EPA)

http://www.inmotionmagazine.com/marste10.html

CAFO is a bad deal for every living breathing human being from a health stand point, but the people who embrace CAFO’s only see the money, while they jeopardize their own wives, husbands, children, mothers, fathers – their entire families health. Money, evidently to them, is more important than even breathing.

It is those people who must be stopped … and voters who see those who want to stop them, will vote for that person, because that person cares more about those voters health and well being than the other candidates. Believe it.
