He is a hero when he flies the helicoptor to the rescue after hot check writers that didn't show up for court. I think we should vote him into the U.S. Congress after all the work he has done to get on KY3 News.

I am sure you both know exactly what it takes to run the Sheriff's office and jail. Step up and run against him and walk a day in his world.

Sheriff should have made the cuts before the election. It would have showed the people he was willing to work for us not keep taking from us. How come we never here about the 5k a month the city pays for use of the jail and the 20 dollars for every ticket written by the city that goes to county. I figure he takes in over a 100k a yr off the city not including the surrounding cities. Should have asked for an eight instead of a quarter. Greed

A prisoner becomes a ward of the county once he or she is booked into the County Jail. If they become sick and need medical attention the Jail has to pick up the tab. The County also has to provide meds for these fine citizens. Along with a warm place to sleep at night. State law says that there has to be a jailer / inmate ratio maintained, I am not sure what that number is but I wonder if we meet that ratio? Take a look at the current roster and see how many of the current prisoners are from the City, I doubt that the $5,000.00 per month from the City of MH go very far to cover the cost of housing their prisoners on an annual basis. It is a crying shame that they will be letting prisoners of all levels out of jail. The day they finish taking the beds out of the jail will be a sad day, mark that day down and watch the crime rate start going up. If there is no place to do your time why not take a chance and do the crime.

Yes, and he has several squad cars, a couple of river boats, a lake boat and I think he even has a pontoon. None of which have anything to do with the JAIL budget.

if the Quorum Courts over the years would have budgeted for the jail after it was built, it would not be in the condition that it is in now. Sheriffs rely upon the county's legislative body, known as the "Quorum Court", to appropriate funding and approve the yearly operating budget.

Let us not forget about the estimated $12,000+/year profit that the Baxter County Detention Center (BCDC) boasts for price gouging the commissary prices for inmates...
The beds were officially out as of 12/12/12... So I guess the commissary profits should be decreasing soon, but let me point out that a rise in commissary prices went into effect about 12/16/12 for BCDC...
I personally would like to know what kind of kickback the sheriff's department (or John Montgomery himself) is receiving from the collect call inmate phone service price gouging scheme that is going on in BCDC... Phone calls are costing inmate's family members around one dollar per minute...
I guess a Freedom of Information Act request will give all this info...(update coming soon)

Why shouldn't the Commissary turn a profit? And why do the inmates get to make phone call period? The are in freakin jail! If the families don't like it maybe they should bail them out.

Why do people think that people in jail deserve things like phone calls, cigarettes and such? JAIL!

The "quorum Court" is a type of fee system that essentially creates incentives for poor jails to skimp on food, services and prison support. Often, this allows the sheriff to often augment the kinds of Law Enforcement services that attract public support and are therefore helpful at the polls. The answer would be a multijurisdictional or "regional" jail, although it is fiscally sound it would effect interest groups. Political leaders would not want to give up the autonomy and control over the patronage jobs and control over the $$$..... changes are good and should be looked into....HELLO?

Excuse me, but how many inmates are supposed to be serving time elsewhere, and how many inmates shouldn't be in the jail at all??, but community service would do just fine...and plenty of the inmates would probably tell you some horror stories if allowed to do so. And MHPD is simply an iflated bunch of big fish in a little pond....without ethics, professionalism.... and plenty of them are just plain mean and lie on police reports.....$$$$$ Shame!

DOES ANYONE CARE??
I don't know about everywhere, but ever hopeful that good will overcome...somewhere..Not likely around here. It's all a money game, because people love money, and SOME powerful people REALLY LOVE MONEY,AND POWER I'm not sure which is worse...the power abusers or the money lovers....and the love of money is the root of ALL EVIL... It's a shame, but just about everything, including and especially the government, large or small, is about money, money, money, and more money....in certain people's pockets, of course. Why do you think 'they' call 'it' "BIG MONEY"? Why does one hear: "Money talks."? Always try to have and keep a positive attitude, but don't be fooled....many facades..fake fronts..out there. Remain aware. The Prince of the Air has great power in this world. Be positive and Beware.
