I wish that I could afford to be a snowbird in Gulf Shores. But being a mid 30's male I probably wouldn't fit in very well with all the old Yankees. : )

You would have to come up with a hundred things wrong with Gulf Shores and listen to how wonderful everything is back home. They seem to all listen to the same old broken record. The wonderful people, houses, shopping, food, and the climate are what they are and going to be. Why can't they enjoy what's here as it is and leave the comments and snide remarks at home.

No, you probably wouldn't. First of all you are probably a Redneck who works mostly from one job to another that pays you cash so that the IRS has no idea that you even earned a dime for an entire year and, of course, you haven't and won't, report that you made a dime during the year. Then, like most rednecks in or from Georgia, you probably stop working for a month or two about this time of year so that you can sit out in the woods with your other toothless friends and drink Kentucky Bourbon while you are pretending to be the last of the Great White Hunters. No, you probably wouldn't fit in with the Snow Birds who have worked hard all of their lives and paid taxes on their incomes and saved their money, penny by penny, year after year so that finally, they could afford to come to Gulf Shores every winter and enjoy the fruits of their years of continuous labor.

Sigh, I see that I have struck the nerve of a yankee. I own a fairly successful small business, have all my teeth but one. I don't drink bourbon and don't hunt. But I will gladly take any extra venison that you have. I most certainly wouldn't fit in if the rest of the snowbirds are obnoxious, arrogant jerks like yourself.

Well good. One less Confederate in Gulf Shores won't hurt us one bit. And, all Snow Birds are not 'Old Yankees' and are not obnoxious and arrogant except when referred to as 'Old Yankees'.

Don't you mean one more Confederate is more than welcome?

I don't think so. Most of them are still down here fighting the Civil War anyway. I think I will have to get Rusty Limpbone to mention on his "Fair and Balanced" radio spin show that the war is over because that is the only person any of them listen to. Put down your guns boys and pick up your corn-cob pipe and jug of moon shine and start celebrating.

For someone who hates the south and our way of life as much as he does I wonder why he chooses to live here? I think he is just looking for attention.

First off I never said anything about "old yankees" and second I never said that all snow birds are yankees! I know a (few) northern transplants that are good people.

OK, it's time for me to confess. I moved here from the dreaded North. It was not a forced move--it was voluntary. I love it here and I love almost everyone that I come in contact with who are native Southerners. You couldn't pay me to move back North. I just like to get your blood pressure perculating and you have been a real Southern Gentleman in your responses. A real Northerner would have cut me off at the knees.

Gotcha, if we can't mess with each others minds a little bit then what fun is it? I live in a town that is full of Florida transplants, most are good people but there are a few that cause a big "locals vs. move-ins" battle to constantly go on. Is is like that down there also with the locals vs. the snowbirds?

Some locals like to kid the snowbirds for being cheap. They accuse them of ordering water with lemon and then putting sugar in it rather than pay for an iced tea. The waitstaff thinks they are all bad tippers. Who knows the truth. I don't see the local vs. move-in feud too much. Actually, the 'come-here's' are starting to out-number the 'been-here's.'

The waitstaff sometimes forget that the tips are supposed to be tied to SERVICE. Ninty nine per cent are exellent at their jobs but the last two times eating at GS has blessed us with the bad one per cent. Everyone knows that there are rush hours that can frazzle the waitstaff's nerves but they need to remember they are in the SERVICE industry. Lackadaisical young managers sometime forget or are afraid to pass this fact along to their staff so the employees become the tail wagging the dog.
