Oh great, here we go again. Now the environmentalists are going to jump onto this issue like it was their own ancestors buried there and demand VDOT either give up the whole project or provide some insane buffer that will make them want to give up the whole project. I'm sure there's a workable solution here, but you won't hear that from the mouth or the bypass opponents.

I watached a newcast on which someone who apparently knows alot about the family who is buried there was going on and on. My question, if this family was so important to the history of the area, why did no one know the cemetery was there? The bypass has been the topic of conversation for a very long time. It seems someone would have stepped forward before this to challenge the path of it. Seems a little strange to me.

In addition, I wonder what the family in the cemetary would have thought of the bypass. If they were so important and active in local affairs MAYBE they would have been in favor of this much needed road and therefore wouldn't mind being moved to make way for it.

How much would you have to adjust a highway so it goes around a cemetery? Not much I'm guessing. So the family did not let anyone know where the cemetery was until now. Surely they must have known it was in the area and was in the way of the bypass. I hope they can move it to someplace nice. That's only fair. I'm sure the people in the cemetery would not mind being moved, so this is all for the living relatives, a few people, compared to the hundreds of thousands who would benefit from the bypass.

Anyone know how much they are paying to bury bodies along the route? I could use some extra income.

(Also, is it BYOB ... or do they provide the bodies?)

Widen the path of the road so that the median can have enough space to accommodate the cemetery. The road does not have to deviate and the occupants of the cemetery can continue to rest.

Maybe they would mind having a giant scar on top of their town of Hydraulic. Disrupting their family lives and community. Who wants such a monstrosity? The Rivanna Reservoir covered over the town of Hydraulic. After destroying their town, do you really think they would be in favor of a bypass?

It's the Sammons family. They still live here and are opposed to moving the cemetary.

something else for the contrarians and obstructionist to yell and scream about in their attempt to stop progress and construction of the western by-pass....get out the road buildiing equipment and start moving dirt, leveling up the grades and start paving......remember it doesn't matter what is on top of you when the resurrection comes you are going to rise up ..even if you happen to be paved over....by the western by-pass......

I do live here and I'm in favor of building the bypass ASAP. So is every person I know with 2 exceptions. One lives on route 20 and rarely drives on 29. The other lives very near the proposed bypass so for her it's a NIMBY situation. I suspect you fall into the same category as the only people who oppose the bypass live near its path or don't drive on 29.

All VDOT HAVE got to do is take out the center trees from WalMart bridge to Target road lanes and put new lanes from the bridge to Target and that would slove the problem and save LOTS OF MONEY. Make it the same lanes all the way and stop the pale up from the bridge to Target. Come on VDOT because when you go from a 3 or 4 lane highway to a two lane what's going to happen? The BY PASS IS NOT THE ANSWER. Make the road wider and slove everything. Get with the program and get the JOB done that should have been done when the other lanes went in. Big mastake on VDOT'S part in the past. Make it right and save LOTS OF MONEY and a whole lot safer. GET-R-DONE.
