Though this was mostly decided upon the fact, that the accuser did not make mention of these heinous acts to those in authority while given ample opportunity, within what was lead to believe, to be a reasonable time frame...
It was NOT emphasized that the accuser was ashamed and embarrassed for having been beguiled by the one she then loved and trusted the most...
There was just too much self guilt and shame to admit to it, not less be the one to tell!
So what we have here is; one who sacrificed herself, in order to try and prevent this from happening again.
Most people have no idea the toll this has taken on the accuser; mentally and physically since recollecting the memories for these trials.
Well at least she tried, by doing what was within her power in order to try and prevent this from happening again...
I can't blame the jury, the case just was not presented to them very well at all!!

Horrible trial! The lawyers did not present any evidence. The jury had nothing to go on. Can see why they chose not guilty. I feel sorry for the accuser. I believe her...but her lawyer did not help her out at all.

What did you expect the attorney to do, create facts? The accuser did not provide anything of substance to work with.

I can only assume that I did not make my point clear enough in my first post. What I'm saying is that when this abuse first started, the accuser was only a trusting innocent child.
Yes, as the innocence was taken away, and the child grew to understand this was WRONG... The former love and trust this once innocent child HAD, turned to hatred and discord..
Yet this abuse continued in a forceful way afterwards.
The fact that it continued in a forceful way did not remove the guilt and shame.
Who would want to tell this about their self?

Just from knowing this individual for a number of years the only thing I will say is that a leopard does not change his spots. If you see him and there are children around keep a very close eye on things. He is not someone that you can trust and I fear that more children will be victimized.

Let us hope the allegations prevent this perv from adopting any kids. If that is done, then though the victim did not get justice from our system, her efforts were not in vein...she/they did accomplish something.

John ,

It sounds as if you new the victim , I am sorry if you are struggling through this with her . My opinion is biased , I know little about this case , if the somber look of the reporter who has followed followed this case was any indication ;This Lady has suffered yet another huge setback. To her its horrific and the word setback would be understandably offensive. If she walked out of that courtroom on her own two legs , even if she crawled and she knows what the truth is , they ain’t took her down , she is exhausted , they haven’t took her down.... she can't see it now but she will be stronger than she ever was when the smoke clears. I believe her , but if I were someone who new her and cared for her I would look at her and say “ I believe every word you are telling me , but right now lets focus on you . At that point I would not believe a word that comes out of her mouth and if you are a distant observer John even you can start the ball rolling if you may know her, help as little or a lot , you already reached out in a BIG way by just believing her ... JUST DONT LEAVE HER ALONE

I wish I knew the exact way to handle this , just ideas ,but I would keep reaching until somebody understands what your trying to tell them and the tools she may need right now.

Never know , you may help somebody with a simple phone call. Text ,email

Unfortunately, we as a society need to be better educated when it comes to sex crimes and abuse. A lot of times these jurys come back with not guilty verdicts for the simple fact that they couldn't understand why the victim "waited so long to come forward." Some cases come out years later due to shame, embarrassment, fear, and/or denial. Some people become so tramatized that they push the abuse they suffered way deep down and force themselves to forget about it. And unfortunately some people chose to not say anything until the abuse starts happening again to someone who is close to them or a younger child. It doesn't mean that the accuser is lying. I think a lot of people judge too quickly. We don't know what anyone would do in this type of situation unless we were in it ourselves.

So if the case was so weak why did the prosecuter carry foeward with the trial? Prosecuters are getting a bad rap these days and deservedly so.

Thank God that the system finally got one right. I never understood that these type accusations happened on a daily basis and most of the time the man is sent to prison just because of "he said, she said". Its not right for women to file these charges with no evidence and a man looses his freedom, friends, family, and many times financial well being. Congradulations Mr. Shifflett and i hope you enjoy the rest of your life!

I was told by the Persecuting Attorney of VA, who is suppose to represent the Commonwealth on behalf of sexual abuse victims, to with hold some of my allowed testimony for fear it may cause a mistrial, due to the previous two trials ending in hung jury's on my behalf. What it did not reflect was that my stepbrother came to me nearly three years ago and told me that my father had also abused him until around the age of 16. I knew at that point in time it had not stopped with me, but it has progressed, because what was done to him was worse than what was done to me. I was the truth and evidence in this case. It was not a random person off the street, it was my father. He portrayed himself as a father figure and a preacher. This is a silent crime where you take a child, you take away all of the ability to speak out. It is not done in a building, it was done in my own home. I am and was the evidence of this case.

Note: Please excuse the spelling error at the top; I meant "Prosecuting Attorney"
This was typed by a friend on my behalf...

Seems to me this Prosecutor has some answering to do if he told you to willfully withold evidence. That in itself is unlawful. I am so sorry for the injustice done to you and your step-brother by the system.

And the jury may have found him not quilty but that doesn't mean he's innocent of the charges. They just didn't have enough evidence to convict him.

After thinking about this a couple of days now; I believe that "Persecuting Attorney" is very applicable in this trial. He sure didn't do anything significant in order to "Prosecute" Ronnie Shifflett
But I did see where the accuser was persecuted relentlessly by lack of objections.
