There are lots of existing places to train. A new state of the art facility with several gun ranges, a driving range, and other training facilities is being built right down the road in Nottaway. It would cost police almost nothing to train there (facility is paid for by athe state) and they could use the millions and millions of dollars they would save to hire lots more officers.
Seriously? It takes about 4 hours to travel to Nottoway and back. The logistical issue and cost in overtime as well as fuel and wear on the Police Cruisers makes this a non-starter

You need a range that is located in a reasonably accessible location so if those who are in attendance can be called out if necessary. Do you really want any fraction of your Police Force that far away?

Not true. Look at the website the police have set up - they will use the range quite often, and also plan on doing night trainings...
Police agencies trains at the most 4 times a month. If they have to train at night it would be no more than once or twice a year. Outside of ranges at the Police Academies, most Police ranges are rarely used more than once or twice a week.

Why were the police asked to leave the Rivanna range where they have trained for many years and why isn't this the issue that is being explored? I have heard from several people that the police were disrespectful and unsafe at the range and were asked to go elsewhere. Sure, this is a rumor, but why havn't the police said anything otherwise or been forced to explain this situation?

Typical NIMBY. Very un-creative. Go somewhere else and bother someone else, just don't bother ME ME MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
NIMBY's shut up unless you can recommend other sites and why they would be better. Sometimes you gotta take one for the team.
The Sandy Hook massacre reinforces why we need quality police training.
I think we should call you Nimby!

Cops are people too who also suffer the same ailments as the rest of us. The difference is they think their above the law.

I live within a mile radius of the proposed Police Shooting Range. It saddens me to read posts by people I know are not fully informed on the range issues. I don't want a shooting range anywhere near my house. I am very supportive of the Police and want them to be proficient shots. Does anyone recall the accident that happened several years ago with the woman gardening near UVA's range when she took a stray round to the breast. I don't think it was ever proven to be from the UPD, but still, accidents happen. How much money do you think the County would be coughing up with the numerous warnings they have heard from trained experts if such an accident happened. "Gross Negligence." Police can and will have accidental discharges that the proposed 20 foot berms won't stop. As the county board of supervisors who are placed there by the people of the county, please listen to Southern Albemarle residents and vote against the Keene Range during your final vote.

There is not a police department with in 100 miles that has the training budget, overtime budget or ammo budget to shhot every day and use 4,000 rounds a day. Yes there will be a future fire training center that is also needed. Get over yourself, it's being built on an unuseable old dump. When you have to mail out a flyer packed with lies it already shows they are grasping at straws to make a point
They want the ACPD to shoot in Nottaway County....That's smart, lets hav 20% of the department two hours away if something horrible happens. saveruralalb.com is stupid. As for the business owners that support them like Justin Willey of Frank Hardy Real Esate and Realtor Jom Bonner, I will make sure I stear people away from your business!
Apparently Albemarle County does because that is THEIR estimate of the rounds per day -(see the Planning Commission Minutes 4/3/2012) 4,000 - that is 444 per hour and their experts say it will be 86 DB at the perimeter - that IS 6 X louder and 100X greater sound amplification than the County's noise limits. ACPD can shoot at Augusta County (18 mi away - their estimate), free at Buckingham, Fluvanna detention centers, and if they are training 3 x a year (Chief Sellers said that is HIS goal) what's the big deal traveling 85 mi down the road - I travel further (on my time, at my own expense and I pay for my courses) for my yearly job training requirements. He said there will be 10-20 officers per day training out of the 425 total law enforcement officers using the facility - that is less than 4%. If that can not be managed, they have bigger problems than scheduling. How often are potentially 400 law enforcement officers needed???
Get your facts before you make uneducated comments.

Hey Southern Albemarle residents it happens to be a range about 6-8 miles east of you. It's at the old Fluvanna County landfill and is for the county law enforcement training. I wonder why you haven't thought about sending Alb's finest there? With what you are saying about the distance gun noise travels I'm sure you have heard the officers training there.
Great idea - they should go there! Law enforcement and military around the country are regionalizing their training facilities for cost reasons and most are building indoor ranges supplemented with simulation technology - the training results are better. Why wouldn't ACPD do that? Does Alb Co need to spend $20 M to train our police? Isn't that overkill? It's your tax $ too!

At a time when safety is of utmost importance (especially gun safety and first responder training), blocking a training facilities for those who protect and serve (some of whome also have "so little" - to quote someone from the article), seems a bit far-fetched; though, since I do not live near Yancey, I cannot speak about it myself. We certainly cant put a gun range in the City of Charlottesville, so Albemarle County... you are the next closest area (logic and geography).
I also am appalled that someone had the gal to say "the little that they have" regarding what I can only assume is the status of homeownership in Albemarle County - things which MANY MORE PEOPLE do not have than do. Be grateful, find peace, gain understanding of lifes true necessities.
There are better alternatives. It CAN be put inside in one of the unused manufacturing plants around the County in a Development area where there actually will be adjacent facilities (gas stations, restaurants, etc.) the police officers can use, and it would provide an economic boon to those areas, many of which are suffering from the loss of those plants. Enclosed it does no harm to the public health and safety - no errant bullets, lead contamination and no noise! You try living next to 4,000 rounds of bullets per day at 86 DB - 6xes louder than the County's noise limits - you find peace in that! This position is not anti-police - we fully support them. The issue is not if but where and what kind a place this should be. The right place does not cause these issues and does not depreciate property values and cost the County hundreds of thousands of dollars each year in lost tax revenues.

Actually, they shoot from time to time at a private range (Rivanna Gun Club) that does let them hang out, when there is space available.

Are you starting to notice a trend with the left wing. Yesterday Obama surrounds himself with children oh boo hoo hoo we have to take all these scary guns away for the sake of the children. I'm not sure who the bigger drama queen was Biden or Obama. Now we have all these anti-range people USING children in the same fashion and also acting like a bunch of drama queens.
Kind of hypocritical when he had just chastised (perhaps rightly so)the NRA for using his kids to make a political point. He didn't hesitate to do the same with other peoples kids himself a couple days later.

I'm fully aware of the facts. The signatures were collected on a mailer/flyer that desribed lies about the amount of shooting with a photo of a baby on it. 1300 peopl is not almost all of Soutern Albemarle. The police need this!. An indoor range is not training, it's a place to shoot in a straight line and qualify. All of the Charlottesville PD and Albemarle PD can only shoot 3 days a month at Rivanna and only a few days in Fluvanna. You and your 1300 are spitting in faces of every law enforcement officer in the area. Typical me myself and I attitude.

A response to ole Fry Spring, crying NIMBY. Fact is a number of alternate sites for a firing range have been suggested and this is an ongoing discussion. There is a right answer for this. So let's find it. It goes way beyond NIMBY. Its about representation of constituants as apposed to ruling them. Study the reality of this issue before jumping to judgements about the participants. Try locating a shooting range next to your place in Fry's Spring. See how that suites you. The negatives are real. Lets locate this range where it doesn't so thoroughly conflict. And, certainly, lets get the police force adequite training. Thanks for your consideration, Fry's Spring, my friend. Best to you.
