A member of an Orinda couple charged with conspiring to steal DuPont Co. trade secrets and provide them to a Chinese firm pleaded not guilty Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Christina Liew entered her plea in U.S. District Court in San Francisco and remains free on $100,000 bail. Her husband, Walter Liew, also intends to plead not guilty, his lawyer told the Journal. He remains in an Alameda County jail, where he has been since the July raid on the couple's home in Orinda.

The pair were indicted in February by a federal grand jury along with their Oakland-based consulting company USA Performance Technology and several co-conspirators in an alleged scheme to illegally obtain DuPont trade secrets and sell them to state-owned entities in China.

Walter Liew, 54, a longtime Silicon Valley engineer, obtained nearly $30 million in contracts with the Chinese companies for titanium white projects, according to court records.

Titanium white is described in court documents as "a commercially valuable white pigment that was used in a large number of materials ranging from paints to plastics to paper." DuPont invented the process to make it in the 1940s, and is the world's largest producer.

The case against the Liews marks the first time U.S. officials have filed criminal espionage charges against a state-owned foreign company. That company, Pangang Group, allegedly wired "millions of dollars" in payments back to Christina Liew's

relatives in China through banks in Singapore, according to the indictment.

The couple are charged with conspiracy to commit economic espionage, attempted theft of trade secrets, possession of trade secrets and conspiracy, false statements and witness tampering.

Looks like their friend Mayer Quan will bail her out and sent her back to China before their cases make it towards court.
