It was interested to watch it but to many old geezers and fatsos were in it that you would not
see in the reel battle back in the 1800.

Remember in the 1860s men were drafted. so you had all sizes and shapes including the "fatsos". Also many enlisted both young and old.

But the felt would have burned off in theor marching and hard lifestyle with many times not enough good food. The old guys would have mostly died off or went home sick.

Considering that the average life expectancy at that age was in the 40's if I recall correctly you are right, there probably weren't any old geezers out there, at least by today's standards. But if you put an overweight older guy who works a desk job in a wool suit in 90degree heat you can bet they probably have a better idea of the grueling ordeal those soldiers went through than some of the others!
