Okay, so when i go to install Service Pack 2,
I keep getting the error message:
"The file c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe is open or in use by another application.
Close all other applications and then click Retry."
So, then i close EVERY open application EXCEPT for the XP SP2 installing programs, and i click Retry,
and Guess What? It shows the error message again!
what do you suggest i do?

Start your computer in safe mode.
Rename the file in question
Restart your computer in normal mode.
Update SP2.
IT might as you to start a couple of services follow the instructions on the website.
You are good to go.
Cheers !!!

Same problem here. Safe mode and changing file name didn't help either. Windows tech support was a joke, and I'm about to beat the PC to death >.< We need some help from someone who knows what's up with this system32/cmd.exe is open or in use click retry error. Thanks in advance!

I am having exactly the same problem when I go to install Service Pack 2,
I keep getting the error message:
"The file c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe is open or in use by another application.
Close all other applications and then click Retry."
So, then i close EVERY open application EXCEPT for the XP SP2 installing programs, and i click Retry,
and Guess What? It shows the error message again!

This is a rather pathetic and annoying situation considering there is no information available on the microsoft website to deal with this and there have obviously been so many other people who's time has been wasted by this product failing, get it together bill.

HI guys back again, I have a solution, it worked very well for me,it might be a little on the undersirable side but it does work, I had recenly upgraded to win xp and had downloaded all the recent updates and then installed service pack 2 , the issue is with the recent updates, in my case I went to a previous restore point from the start accessories system tools and then restore point, this was a point before installing the updates, after rebooting the service pack 2 installed without a hitch, it would appear that it might require the removal of these updates then reinstalling them later , I hope this helps , it really does work or did in my case, take care, carlos
