Governor Richardson is happy that 30,000 jobs that could have been in the United States are going to Mexico.
And he wanted to be President of the United States?
Go figure.
The name NAFTA should be changed to NASTA, because it has nothing to do with free trade it's SLAVE trade.
Anybody know how much the average employee makes in these places? How come they don't pay them at least minnimum wage per hour of the U.S.?
No wonder why the Mexican people want to come to the U.S. for jobs right?
The people of Mexico are not stupid, because of their corrupt government they're forced to these low paying jobs. Oh, but they get free transportation to the job and free food right?
Just like Nike shoes made in China with 5 year old kids making pennies a day. The finished product with materials, and slave labor, costs about $5.00/pair to make and sell in the U.S for over $100.00.
Talk about windfall profits.
Where is the Congressional investigation on this?

Nobody cares.

Without a doubt the economic engine of the region (ELP, JZ and ST) is the Maquiladora industry. Without it the region would be just focused on low value-add activities like retail. I hope the folks from ELP and ST capitalize on this opportunity and replicate the impact to bring even more business to the area.

Wrong, China does not use child labor to produce goods, where did you get that Nike uses child labor?.

Wrong, it is cheaper to produce in Mexico , in US labor costs are higher due to salaries, raw materials and in some cases low productivity. I outsource products in Mexico and Asia, I know what I am talking about. How about you?

Do not blame China and Mexico for your ignorance, read Business Week, Wall Street Journal, or at least Google.

Those Jobe where never intended for the US.. they where intended for Cina or Taiwan.. do you think a person in the US would work for $4 dll an hour? Bill richardson is happy becasue he helped bring an project that will benefit the trasnportation, contrsturction, wharehouse, retail and more industries in the region.

FYI.. every Job generatedby a manufacturing industry creates 2 additional jobs in service.

Maquiladoas pay way higher than the Mexican minimum wage. It is about $2.50 an hour plus 41.65 in benfits. Thats a total of $4.15 per hour

THIS IS NOT A SLAVE TRADe... Got to college and you'lllearn about Purchasing Power Parity, or PPP.. this wage is copred to $7 dll per hour in the US.

Imagine living on $7 an hour in the US. IMPOSSIBLE. But a Mexican worker will be able to buy a house, a newer used car, have healthcare and confortably bring food to a family of 4.

They are paying them a comparable amount of the minimum wage per hour of the US right now (including benefits), so when this new industry comes in, salaries will go up again. The same happened with Electolux. A worked there makes more money than if he crossed the border to work for minimum wage. Plus his standard of living is higher.

This statement show what an IDIOT you are. Don't you understand that these type of investments is what is needed to reduce the amount of illegal immigrants flowing into the US??? the only way to decrease illegal immigration is to help raise the standard of living in Mexico and reduce that gap.

that statement just shows your green with onvy or your really stupid an uneducated.

Let me tell you.. these are not low paying jobs.. Juarez, and the state of Chihuahua have been benefited by investments of plants like Delphi, electrolux, Lexmark, Khol and others.

Beng able to buy a nice house, a new car, traveling to europe on the summer... that's not a low paying job my friend.

On the other hand, you look at el Paso, where the largest employers are EPISD, YsletaISD and Fort blis... Men.... THOSE ARE LOW PAYING JOBS!!!!

Mexico is unwillingly exporting its more precious natural resource. Mexicans.

These jobs help people get a decent paying job IN MEXICO and help them provide to their family food, house and health care. It will help them so their kids STAY IN SCHOOL and educate themselves to get a gigh paying job in the future.

You guys first complain about immmigrants crossing illegally into the US, then you complain about jobs generated in Mexico to help those people. That's just stupid.

Decent paying? Tell you what...you go to Juarez and find a place to stay for your "family of 4" on the money you pay your workers. Good Luck!

You are nothing but a human misery merchant. Exploiting the most desperate people you can find is not a virtue.

So you're telling me that its better to offer them no jobs at all?

Did you know that these workers can get 30 year a fixed rate mortage paying only 100 dll per month? Providing healthcare for the whole family? IMO that' very decent.

If someone in the US makes less than $10 dlls an hour, they won't be able to afford a house ever. their family won't have access to healthcare and they'll live on check by check. That's a pretty miserable life in my opinion.

In that case what you call "slave labor" its actually pretty nice. come to Mexico.. we'll give you free land and tax incentives!!!
