Pavilion dv1000 doesn't recognise itself !

I have been given a second hand Pavilion dv1000 laptop. It hasn't been switched on for a long time and wouldn't boot up when I turned it on. I eventually managed to dump the Windows XP programme and tried to re-load from the supplied disks. When I got to the page asking for the 25 digit identity code, I put in the figure on the label on the back of the machine but a message appeared on the screen saying it was the wrong code. I tried again - even got someone else to do it in case I was making a mistake - same message. Is there any way to convince the machine it is what it says it is, please ?
