Public Comments on Keetac Expansion
The proposed expansion at Keewatin Taconite is moving forward in the permitting process.
The Minnesota DNR has finished the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the expansion, and is accepting public comments on it.
Keetac's parent company U.S. Steel wants to expand the mine and restart an idled production line. The expected timeline is not until 2012 or 2013.
A public information meeting is coming up on Monday, January 11th, at 6:30pm at the Hibbing Memorial Building.
Rumor has it step 2 at minntac to close in 2 years when this line re-starts
I will have to see this to believe it. I cant seem to figure where they would shut down step 2. Dont get me wrong this is a positive thing here but I have to be realistic also.

Yep, we'll be putting him in place alright, his name is Olen, not Nolen, and this guy is a dandy. Heard from quite a few over at Minntac to watch this one.

What pattern of 12 hr shifts are you guys working, and some opinions of these 12 hr shifts? Supposedly we are looking into it as well here at Minntac. Most of us would like the same as the foremen with the 9 day stretch, some like the 4 on 4 off and then there are some whom don't want it at all. So just looking for info, thanks. Also, what did they do about vacation and o/t.

Don't know what facility you are referring too but at LEW in Canada we work 12 hour shifts and they are great. USS tired to implement an 8 hour pattern which basically gave you no time off. On our 12 pattern every other weekend is a 3 day weekend.

Our pattern goes as follows over a month
Su Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa
Wk1 N OFF OFF D D OFF OFF
Wk2 OFF N N OFF OFF D D
Wk3 D OFF OFF N N OFF OFF
Wk4 OFF D D OFF OFF N N

Your not going to get the overtime you think. You will get paid straight time for 12 hrs.Your on call if they need somebody to fill in for someone that is not there. Here they have a couple of different schedules to pick from..The only thing they want is to work you like a dog so they can steal your pension from you..Beware of what you wish for!!

Rumor has it the pit at Minntac will be starting 12s in March with the 4 on 4 off pattern like Keetac. Unknown bout the rest of the plant. Also heard they are trying to get the pattern of the forman with the 9 day stretch. Heard quite a few Keetackers don't like their new pattern but again rumor, maybe they will speak up here with what they like and don't so we can get it right

12 hour shifts are good as long as they pick a good pattern. The one I posted earlier is a great pattern. Like I said every other weekend you get Fri, sat and sun off and the breaks in the middle of the week are great too. And you can refuse to come in if someone scratches from their shift. No can make you come in on your day off.

Some like it and some do not..In 6 months when they vote again you will see who is telling the truth..I work there and all I hear is whining ,crying, and backstabbing going on..If you gave 1 a hundred dollars he would cry you did not give him 2 hundred..BE CAREFUL!!You may never get your 8 hour shift back with this company..Be united in your choices!!

UPDATE @ MINNTAC RE:12HR SHIFTS

Well the possibility of 12's are becoming more and more real. There has been a lot of propaganda,& bad mouthing fellow workers either those for or against the AWS.

Fact is this, this topic is moving forward and IS closer, BUT there are many details YET to be ironed out.

I know this is a Keetac Chat forum but for any of you people at Minntac reading this and haven't been to a meeting, MAKE SURE you think of ALL ramnifications by accepting this AWS (Alternate Work Schedule). I will NOT tell you how you should vote but you NEED to ask questions and think of ALL things considered before approving this AWS when it is put to vote. I wrote here because I see some Keetacker's have shared there 12 hr deal on this forum and maybe will offer advice again, or be peeved we cluttered their forum.

1. Pension: New Hires after 02 in the STP Pension. Will this affect my pension? You will be working 1 short week under 40 hrs. This could cause you to wait to draw your pension some day when you wish to retire. Better ask someone who knows if you don't!! But young guys don't think pension, they think $40,000 trucks etc....... Which brings on the next item.

2. The Pay - Will I be losing any Sunday or Holiday Pay? It has been said that the company will only agree to 8 hrs at Holiday Rate on a scheduled work day even though you will be there 12hrs. Also, It has been said no more Sunday pay rate. Overtime after 40 hrs in week or after 12 in a day, Meal @ 14 provided you work 16. Also, Overtime is not allowed the same in all departments so keep that in mind.

3. OverTime: Forget about it, it could be gone tomorrow so NEVER base anything on overtime. Some say work your days off. I will tell you that during times of layoff (bad economic time which we are all just coming out of)there was and should NOT be overtime when fellow brothers and sisters are layed off. What happens should you become ill for 2 or 3 days? 24-36 hrs of pay lost. Also there was no a6ing during those bad times, we worked our scheduled days ONLY!!! MAYBE YOU MIGHT WANT SOME PAID SICK DAYS!!!! Don't hurt to ask now does it? But you won't get it I am sure of that.

4. There are many things pro and con about this topic which I'll leave this to you to think of.

Again I am not talking down the proposal but just telling you young guys to think before you vote. I myself would love the 9 day stretch to spend with my family and the short weekend. But if it means I gotta work 2 years later down the road I don't know then. I personally feel if we work 12 on a holiday then we should be compensated accordingly as well as on Sunday. I also would like to see sick days re-instated incase the unexpected happens. We will see more bad times again that is a given so don't count on overtime.

Yes the schedule is great but you need to ask the questions to see what you are losing to get it because going back will be harder than the effort you all put into the AWS.

If we are guarenteed in writing all these things, it should be worth trying. If you think of other things I haven't mentioned, bring it to your elected officials to barter for you.

And one last thing, make sure the pattern is detailed in writing!!! You want the foreman's pattern. If that is how it is written, it may be changed.......... US Steel is smart so cover your ARSE!!!!!!!

I heard that before any votes, there will be more meetings so this post is not meant to pursway anyone's vote but to get you to think of things we would like before something we don't like is forced on us. Let's get it fine tuned so the majority likes it so get your thoughts and concerns to the union meeting or to your elected officials. Also, try not to badger your friend or foe when they don't agree, remember we all are there for our own personal welfare and we all have different needs so try to respect someone else's wants as well as your own.

Thanks
