Hey, good idea. Who is the area manager for the pit? Reason I'm asking is in the last go around I was told that the area managers were the ones who picked who got called back and who did not. Do you know anything about this? Also, when they do startup in the spring, do you think it will be a skeletal crew as they had planned for the Oct. startup? Any ideas or info would be appreciated....

Im not sure but i think getti is the pit area manager. As far as if it would be as skeletal when we start up i think it will be but only in the management dept.

Ranger - so the management dept. do you think they are only going to call back the ones they did for this last startup? I have a buddy who never got called back in Oct. but he heard they were down to 33 salaried. Do you think he probably will not get called back? He was wondering how they determined who got called back; on seniority or job description? Just found this site - nice to have our own group. Good idea whoever started it. Keep postin what you know.

Anyone - were there any more retirements offered out at Keetac? Heard they are still trying to scale back but don't know how much further they can go.

I was told they wanted a 10/1 raito for salaried so if they didn't call him they had their 33 people already picked out. I have no idea how they decided who they kept and who they didn't. As for me i am laidoff, but you never know. Everyone with 3yr's or more got a voluntary layoff letter so who knows what could happen. Some of our older workforce has started showing up at mintac they will be able to take the layoff if they want, after dec 4th sometime. I still think we will be at mintac doing repair's sometime this winter.

Best Info I get here is that Minntac will be using Ketac workers for our major on line 4 in Jan.

Yeah company wants all of our maintenance on Jan 4th... More bad news.... Unless our legislators get a chage made at unemployment soon ... our $566 a week amount will change to $445 a week (this is for my account based on my one year since my layoff date)... just so everyone can plan for the worst... GOOD LUCK

Minntacer - would you happen to know if they take anyone under 3 years as a transfer to Minntac. Would they notify if a position opened or do we have to reapply over there I have 2-1/2 yrs at Keetac - have not heard a thing - no callback for a physical-no letter (termination) whatever. I am just sitting here waiting but I don't know if I will get called back or not. Do they notify you if they have an opening or are we supposed to be checking ourselves?

You must not be in maintenance!!!! MinTac will not be hiring anyone at all, as long as they can just send Keetac guys over there... lots of people would have done this if possible... good luck

Bob,

I work at Minntac in the Agglomerator and I can tell you that as of right now there is for sure a hiring freeze here at Minntac at least until the first. They cannot hire anybody until everyone is off layoff from what I am told.

Currently we have some of the older Keetac employees that are filling openings in the operations area on shift work as hybrids/attendents.

The Keetackers claim they may gey a voluntary layoff (sounds like most of them want this) but at the same time they are unsure if they will get it.

Unless there is a major shift in the economy real soon, yes Keetac people will be assisting during the 2 majors that are tentatively planned after the first.

Hopefully things turn around and everyone is back to work, until then have a safe and happy holidays!!!

HibTac Workers Being Called Back
Some good news for Hibbing Taconite steelworkers to bring to the Thanksgiving table. They will be coming back to work, in phases, starting in January.

The plant has been idle since May. On Wednesday, employees started receiving letters notifying them that half of them will be called back the first week of January.

Then 53 people will return in February. And the rest on layoff will come back in March. At that point, all 540 union employees will be clocking in.

Frank Jenko, union president, said that they are happy about the callback, but some bitterness remains about the long layoff.

Some steelworkers were laid off in January. If they are the last to be called back, they will have been on layoff for over a year.

The anticipated re-start will begin the first week of April. By the end of that month, all three production lines are scheduled to be running.

Hibbing Taconite is the second largest mine and plant in the Northland.

Thanks Red Rooster - so can you tell me if Minntac does have to hire would they consider Keetacers? Do we get notified to re-apply for any positions than may open up over there or once a Keetacer always a Keetacer?

I had to make a comment about the line about how some bitterness remain's. They have little to complain about compaired to Keetac people USS has been treating us like shit since this started. We found out we were geting laid off from the new's, and what they did to the people who never got called back last time was the worst stunt a mining company has done in the last 50 yrs. People Quit school and job's and never made it back to work. At least Hibbing Taconite has been somewhat strait with their people.

I am sure this will get some response:, Although I feel your pain and agree 100%, things are what they are and not a damn thing you can do about it except keep on keeping on, or give up hope and possible goto Hib Tac or quit waiting altogether. It's that paycheck and good benefits that you miss and will keep waiting for. I bet you didn't complain when you were getting those nice profit sharing checks either. You know what, we are all in the same boat so quit whining!!!!
