Looks like they are going to close down the coke ovens this Thursday. Not sure why they want to close this place up completely as we make money and the union tells us we are the best plant in North America. But with the rumors of a strike getting louder as the July 31st deadline approaches it looks like a long time before we see the inside of LEW again. We were better off as Stelco.

perfect from 55% of my earnings dropping to nothing if they {u.s.Steel} force us to strike.I guess that would fufill thier commitments by taking us off the govt payroll since diane finlay thinks it is a lucrative job anyway.Considering 90% of us have been out for awhile the company knows its a financial death sentence to those who are already sinking on E.I. payments

Was told at a Union meeting that we will still get EI if we go on strike because we were already on it before the strike. Not sure if this is 100%
true...but what was said.It would have helped if we could have gotten more that one SUB pay.I have to agree with you that they know that the strike is a financial death to us.
Cheers and hope we all get back to work.

If your plant is getting shut down, would it be better to not strike until if and when they decide to open. Seems to me you would be entitled to more and longer benefits if you are considered laid off, instead of calling a strike while you're laid off. Are y'all getting SUB from USS now? You know that would be gone if you called a strike.

There is no sub left only lasted a few weeks. They will get unemployment insurance if they were laid off prior to a strike. I hope they stay stong as CONCESSIONS ARE NOT SOLUTIONS

Any here make it to the union meeting last night for LEW...I could not make it and just wondered if there was any new information and if anything was said as to where our raw material was being sent.
BTW if you have not seen the contract proposal that US Steel wanted us to take out at the Lake you can check it out at the USW 8782 web site...

There is no way we are going to take those concessions.
Stay strong.Cheers and take care

I've given up on the morons controlling USSLES and am looking for alternate full time work. My wife is behind me and we have decided to sell the house before returning to a job with the current repressive, control freak style of management. Lets hope the Feds have the balls to stand up USS and go further than "Mr Clements is very, very mad"

Well I looked at the new contract and I must say that I would rather take the contract then be on EI. I feel very bad for my fellow brothers and sisters that are locked out.

Take the contract and you will still be on E.I. The company wouldn't give a start up date if we signed.

lew is the most modern and one of the most efficent mills that uss own. I do not think they would shut it down, there was a global recesion and things are slow. I think if we signed the contract instead of being locked out we would be working now.

If you are willing to work for that contract, then I suspect you must be a salary person or just plain spineless.

How long have you worked here? You are going to call me spineless? I am not salary, if I was I wouldn't care because I would still be getting paid.
What part of the plant did you work in?

If the plant was not shut down in March....we would be on strike now...as that contract was garbage and would have never been accepted.

Stay strong...Cheers

At the union meeting, when the contract offer was revealed, not one person stood up and said it was worth accepting. Where were you?
As far as saying you think we would be back to work if we accepted the offer, you are wrong, the company would not say that. You might want to attend some union meetings or gather some information so you can make an informed decision.
