We have received about 30 Walmart MoneyGrams from customers that because of poor design for the money order, the customer thinks they must tear off the white area at the bottom of the money order. This is the area that the routing number and check number is printed. We returned them to the customer to take back to Walmart to have the check replaced. Walmart charges a $12 fee to replace the check. I called MoneyGram for our customer and they said they have receive numerous complaint that the customer thought they were supposed to tear off the bottom white portion and they are re-designing the check, but they still have to charge the customer $12 fee because they made a mistake. I think Walmart or MoneyGram should replace these check without an additional fee. We are going to credit our customers account for the face value of the check although we will have to pay a $12 fee for each check we receive. We would not charge a customer if it was a problem with our product. Where is Sam Walton when we need him?

Obviously because there are phony money orders with Walmarts name on them out there, and Walmart has no way of dealing with the problem. Patience is a virtue. If you receive one, and are not sure, deposit it, and wait for it to clear.

I think that it is a FEDERAL OFFENS if you try to cash something that is not leagal. You can SPEND from 2-10 in preson and ruin your entire life; Background, credit report, Jobs, school. It is America, you would be like a prisoner on the loose.

She cashed some money grams from SOMEONE in Nigeria........

Let me see,...did she happen to get a very important letter from someone in nigeria that happened to need her help/ that maybe might have been a King, or a Prince..or whatever else they want to be when writing those letters.

All she had to do was cash these particular checks for such and such person....

Any of this sounds familiar?

She met this man, online, through True.com , an online dating site. He told her the Nigerian banks would not cash his money orders. Luckily, she only cashed eight out of the ten he sent her.

My mother is seventy years old. She thought she was doing a "good" deed for this guy. She had to cash in her life insurance policy in order to pay the bank back. The funny thing is, the bank told her the money orders looked ok.

Robin,

Sounds as if your mother has one hell of a big heart, and sadly, she was taken.

I can well understand why one would be upset over this whole issue, especially something like this. Sadly though, wether those money orders looked like from Wal-Mart or say......the post office, everyone knows that even money can be counterfieted.

In this case, I am unsure if anything can be done, a scam like this, though I do not recall all the details now, have been going on for years.

However, I do want to know.....She met this "man"...or person online, was told he needed these Checks to be cashed because he couldn't cash them overseas...apparently, he sent them to her, via the mail, meaning now he has an address,...what other info did she give him?

As I said, I do not remember all the details on how this works, nor can I say if anything can be done. In all honesty, I can't even blame Wal-Mart, for people all the time are doing stupid crap. However, I think Wal-Mart should be notified.

Too bad you can not trace this back to the person that sent these to your mom.

Truthfully, just thinking of it all tees me off,...for I know she is not alone in scams like these.
