Maytag recall becomes troublesome

Full story: Belleville News-Democrat

The national recall of 2.3 million Maytag dishwashers -- which could short-circuit and catch fire -- hit a glitch Friday.

Home buyers should consider having the home inspector perform a recall research investigation on any of the appliances in the home.

I'm happy for Cookie but her link no longer works. It just sends you to the site page which tells you to call them. If you call, it tells you to go to the web site.

If only 10 percent of the 2.3 million owners of the recalled dishwasher called in, how is Whirlpool going to process the calls during regular business hours from 9a.m to 5p.m, mMnday through Friday?
I have spent more than 2 hours on the telephone without speaking to a single person.
Why aren't we able to file our repair requests online?
The CPSC should mandate Whirlpool to set up a special online contact to register the serial numbers and contact information for consumers who own the recalled dishwashers.

The problem with the "recall" is that Maytag is not fixing the problem, they are just offerring to disable the rince agent dispenser so that you can't use it. Their advice to those who still want to use it? Just pour it in the bottom of your dishwasher! You'd have to add it before every wash. Why won't they just fix the dispenser? I won't be buying another Maytag/Whirlpool/anyotherdamnc onnected product from them again.

Started calling Maytag 2/1/07 to get dishwasher on recall repaired. For two years my dishwasher has been giving messages such as "blocked arm", "blocked drain", etc. Upon checking the dishwasher for the message, I found no blocked arm or blocked drain. Called for repair under extended warranty repairman never came. Learned when the dishwasher beeped that I could unlatch door and close again and it would continue for a while then beeping would start again. It took about three unlatchings and the load would finish. If I ignored the beeping, the dishwasher would bypass the messages and eventually finish washing the dishes in about three hours. One year later I called repairman again because I was wearing out the door latch. The Sears repairman told us that I was using the wrong dishwasher detergent causing suds (I use whatever dishwasher detergent is on sale, so it is a rotation of detergents). I should run a cup of white vinegar once a month with an empty dishwasher to clean out the drain. That very night I told my husband that it sounded like a short circuit in the dishwasher to me. I tried what the repairman said but it did not help. I then tried washing my dishes with baking soda since it will cut grease. Baking soda did not help either. I think my problem is still a short circuit related to this recall problem. We have not been able to get past verifying that our Model Number is on recall which I have verified from several sources. Why isn't Maytag calling us? We sent in the registration card after purchasing the dishwasher. We cannot unplug the dishwasher as it is an undercounter built-in and wired in. We cannot turn off the circuit breaker as our refrigerator is on the same circuit. My kitchen isn't big enough to unplug and roll the refrigerator to another recepticle on another circuit. I shutter to think of the nights I have used the delay feature and gone to bed to let the dishes wash while we were sleeping. We are uneasy to leave home now afraid the dishwasher liquid will drip (I had just filled the rinse dispenser which will last about a month under normal use)onto the wires and cause a fire burning up our home. We bought the extended warranty from Sears, and they tell us they cannot do anything since it is a Maytag recall.

I too have one of the affected Maytag dishwashers. I have been buying Maytag appliances to replace existing ones whenever they go bad because I thought the Maytag brand was a reliable one. It appears I have made a mistake. Their customer service is a joke along with the way they are handling this return issue. 75$ coupon? Disable Jet Dry? Unacceptable. My dishwasher clearly states on the front that it is "JetDry Rinse". I don't think an acceptable way of dealing with their engineering mistake is to put a permanent cap on the jet dry container. I hope someone brings a class action suit against them. I'll gladly jump on board. I'm thinking of even going through small claims court for loss of use or damage to my dishwasher.

Wow...small claims court for "loss of use" of a dishwasher..I understand the frustration here, and it maybe a temporary inconvenience, but to me these things happen, and I am glad that I have a dishwasher. Imagine those people that don't even own one and have to do dishes by hand? Or hey what about starving people that could only wish they had dirty dishes to wash. Give me a break....I think we are just a little bit spoiled!

THM,

I wouldn't sit around waiting if you haven't got the repair parts from Maytag yet--I've been waiting a month and still no parts. I called today and am now told another 10-14 business days. I'm with PJH; someone who has had a fire from this needs to start a class action lawsuit, perhaps that would wake Maytag up!!

My Maytag dishwasher is one that has been involved in the recent recall.I removed the inner panel and noticed a large brownish mark on the circuit board .I do not know antyhing about electronics but I think common sense tells me this may have been an indication of a short circuit. If I am right I guess I am fortunate there was no fire.Currently I own a Maytag washer ,had to replace the timer. Also own a Maytag microwave oven ,thtiteen months after purchasing the handle on the door broke. Now problems with dishwasher>I think Maytag is full of shit when they the Maytag repairman is the lonliest man in town.I am done buying Maytag products.Seventy five dollar rebate on purchase of a new dishwasher, not nearly enough in my mind.

You are right, Renee! These folks need to get over it! Check into how many service bulletins/silent recalls have been issued for your cars! You will vomit! Hey, Gary! Good luck with your appliances, since Whirlpool makes Whirlpool, Whirlpool Gold, Estate, Roper, Kenmoore, Kitchenaid, Maytag, Jennair, Amana, any just about every brand outside of GE (king of designed obsolescence!)Consumer reports says if you get two years out of your DW you are doing great! If everyone valued their time in terms of how much they are paid per hour at work, you all are loosing a lot of money sitting on the phone for nothing! You would benefit by going out and investing in a product that will last (you will have to spend). To be fair, I'll let you find the brand on your own, but there are DW's out there for under $1000 designed to last a minimum of 20 years!

Give me a break, Renee. You miss the point. People who don't have dishwashers didn't have to pay for a dishwasher in order to wash their dishes by hand. Hard earned money goes into buying an appliance and companies that are paid for such should be made to delivery.
Spare me the the "politically correct" flippant attitude.

1. 2.3 million diswasher are being recalled; How long did Maytag know -

2. Maytag told me they will only replace the rinse dispenser, wiring, and door liner. All other damaged parts will NOT be replaced otherwise they would face bankrupcy (direct quote).

3. We are being offered $75 no matter how old the washer is or how much we paid for it.

I say a class action is in order.

What is troublesome is not that there is a recall but that a reputable company, like Maytag Corp is treating consumers like crap! I have been waiting for nearly 2 months for the parts to come in even though I have been told in writing that the parts were shipped over a month ago only to find out they lied . I agree that a class action lawsuit is needed to motivate them to do the right thing.Anyone interested in joining ?

Unbelievable. My dishwasher was working great this morning, but after the replacement parts for the recall were installed. It doesn't work at all and I have to wait at least 10 days for a part plus however many days to reschedule another technician. I am very disappointed in the entire process. I have standing water in the dishwasher that can't be drained--what will that do to the parts?
I have contacted A&E, but they can't do anything. I tried to get Maytag to just issue the rebate, but they can't since my dishwasher was "repaired". The technician said that the engineers knew of this issue, but the technicians continue with replacing the parts and ruining the entire dishwasher.
Do not allow them to replace your parts....take the
rebate!!!!!
