Have you identified the means of reward to motivate your employee? Is the employee extrinsically motivated or intrinsically motivated? A good manager may not know it but they do this all the time. In a low pay environment you must use needs hierarchy to determine how to move people along. If you have no idea what I am taking about. You do not need to be in a leadership position.

No, I don't think you should involve employee relations in this. This situation is better handled at the store level, as hard as it may be. I'm sure ALL of us could tell stories similar to yours. You should consider arranging a sit down with your SM and said employee and air out your differences and ways to improve. Should you choose not to go this route, then the best thing to do is, as mean as it may sound, just worry about you and do your job and go home at the end of your shift. I still wouldn't involve employee relations because they get bombarded with childish things like this daily. This is better handled at the store level. Your at work to work and make money and not make friends. If you make friends then great, if not, oh well. Not meaning to sound mean, but you come here asking for opinions.........

You can't assume that the trainee knows too much and you have to train them as if you were following computer code. It's hard to do especially the longer you've been doing a job. You tend to do the job by habit rather than thinking of every step which is what you need to do when you train someone. Empathy? Half of these people do not even work a full day nevermind a full week....empathy my butthole. Whatever happened to the old days where you did your job, did what the PHUCK you are told and just went home? This sissy garbage needs to stop....i actually happen to like a person who is a perfectionist, at least they give a crap and have a goal. Half of these numbskulls haven't a clue what they had for breakfest nevermind have a goal in life.

You don't really exactly need empathy to train people.... you're teaching them something. You need patience and the ability to be able to describe and/or explain how to do something more than one way if they don't understand it the first time.
Patience is the biggest key. Patience to realize that just because they didn't understand the first time doesn't mean something is wrong with you or them - it means you should take the time and go back over it with them step by step and see where maybe there is a failure in communication. IE You thought you said one thing, but they interpretted it differently.
Teaching people is fun, but honestly if they don't want to learn, then don't even bother. Do your best to show them a couple times. If they're resistant and defiant after that, tell management and then let it go.
It's then management's responsibility to address the problem.

Actually' the KEY is to hire people with half a brain so when you explain simple tasks to them they understand it the first time. This way we can actually move on to other things and maybe get something done today. Patients are for hospitols.......

Dear OP....if you were such an intelligent person you would not be working at a drugstore with no managerial job title. I for one will thank Zeus, Mohammad, Jesus,Joseph and Mary that you do not work in my store. You dont even have enough business savy to know when to to go to employee relations ? Your post reaks of immaturity and your are just the type of employee Walgreens loves.....overachieving and undereducated. Do the company a favor and worry about your own work. If you cannot do so then I am sure there is a fast food restaurant in your area who would enjoy your skillset.

Thanks to everyone who has left insightful comments. So many have asked questions but I cannot answer them all. I still just don't understand why everyone hates on the fact that I am proud of my work ethic. I wish half of you did, and maybe less stores in this company wouldn't be such a disgrace. To the very last commenter, "Dumb as a hay rake" - I never said anything about how smart I am. I am not into having a pissing contest with you, but I've been in gifted/talented classes my whole life. I've probably have had more college than you too...And business savvy?(Yes, that has *two" v's) That's why I also used to be an event coordinator in fine dining, and also managed other establishments. I also own my own business on the side. So, wah-wah that I didn't apply for a management position with this company - it wasn't what I was looking for. I asked about the employee relations bit because my exa says that technically the situation needs to be brought up to employee relations, and that her job is on the line if something does happen and they find out no one that knew about about it said anything beforehand about it. Forgive me, I was curious about how bad things have to get before this seems like a viable thing to do. So please, if you have anger issues, take it out on someone else. I am not the reason you won't be getting such a fabulous, undeserved bonus next time around.

Sorry but honesty, facts, truth and pride in your work is not degrading. Only morons that want to be mediocre in life seem to think like you. This is why America is flushing itself down the toilet so we do not have to offend the lowest filth of society. If you are offended, maybe you need to be offended so you wake up!

Hate to break this to you, but Im not a mediocre moron like you wish I was, Ive been an Rph for 9 years with this company, and the only lowest filth of society seems to be you and your hate on people who you believe are lower than you, if thats even possible, my advice, clean up your act, go back to college, get a degree, so you feel better about yourself than an 14.50 sfl and dont need to put others down to build yourself up!

I live modestly and do not overextend myself like others do. You have employees who maybe make 9 bucks an hour and they have the latest and greatest phone, but yet they complain about how much their bills are.....this is just one example of idiots. I can be fine with what i have yet still complain if i think the company is being unfair or taking money away from us collectively. Rich or poor you still have rights, we have several asian old ladies that are rich because of their husbands but they are sooooo bored at home they go to work just for something to do.....which actually they have great attitudes and work better then your typical poor teenager with the latest technology.......look in your heart...you know this to be true.
