This issue isn't too big, but I'd still like to hear some opinions on it. I'm second in command in photo, and have been for maybe a year. Our head photo gets EVERY friday and saturday off just because they say they need it. No reason, it's just the days they say they want off. They haven't worked one of those days since I've been in photo. I see it as very unfair that I'm stuck with not only tags on saturday, but now for the next 2 months, truck too. And they get off. What do you think would be the best way to bring this up? I have on multiple occasions, and the managers always say they're going to do something about it......but nothing happens. I'm not trying to get those days off,I don't mind working those days, I just think if anything, there should be a way to work out getting one weekend a month off per position or something like that.

Sadly, there are a lot of politics involved in scheduling but that depends on the scheduler/management. My experience is that there is always needs mixed with some sort of politics. If you are not liked by management for whatever reason, it may be a tough time to get what you want. It all depends on the relationships and quality of work done by all parties.

In a lot of stores the department heads get to basically choose the best shifts for themselves, so long as it meets the fair scheduling guidelines (1 closing shift/1 weekend shift) and meets the business needs (ie. SBAs working Saturdates).

Our SM wouldn't let anyone get away with stuff like that, everyone at the front will only have one weekend off every month.
If we require a certain weekend, the SM will usually let us have it, but work it out so that the other parties in that department still get their weekend.
As a result one of our co-workers will check to see that they have their 6 sick days for the year, and carefully use them for when they've made plans.

ask for a friday or saturday off......the manager cannot turn you down consistently...that would be unfair scheduling...

Q= are you older-? If so- you must understand that at Wags- older members of staff are required to perform the majority of the grunt work- assignments- and work the less desirable shifts. The acceptance and obvious encouragement of this method of managment practice has become the norm at many stores. The object age discrimination at Wags is a ticking time bomb- One might think a business that is sustained by an age demo that is well above 40 would exercise much more caution about such matters. The negative P.R. of such actions could result in further customer alienation or intesify a grave situation - that Wags can not afford at this time. Simply put- the poor management must end.

Everyone should be required to work volume-weekend shifts N-Q-A.The manager depicted in this post seems to abuse and use the schedule as a source of punishment- or discipline.Such actions never work and do nothing but create more issues. If Walgreens is to survive and push on, the poor management that thrives on pay-back ,retalation tactics must change. Dismal, defeated , workers are not going to be motivated to work as it is with hours cut, paychecks in the balance. let's be honest, The least of Wag's problems should be a jerk playing games with scheduling. Do these people not understand we have reached the tipping point ? Come on. Turn that loser in to H.R..

OP here. No, I'm younger then the HPS by at least ...well lets say she's old enough to be my mother. I do all the grunt work, even some of the HPS ordering from time to time because they're lazy and old. I work truck mornings, tag days, do all the of the ladder required jobs like paper, repacks, etc. They basically do revisions. That's it. And they get off on tag days and as of right now, truck days also.

I know that feel... lol You're in the same situation I'm in. Probably in school as well right? Do all the work to be considered at least an STL with the grunt work pay of a photo tech.

I wouldn't say I'm at the phase of being STL by any means. I still know just the basics when it comes to SIMS related stuff. I'm learning something new every day, though. And I'm willing to learn. I thought knowledge is power, but apparently not at my store. I've yet to call out in almost a year. Yes, I have my days where I'm more unproductive than usual, but everyone does. If it wasn't for me, no paper, thaw&serve, cooler, any of the food bays, and laundry would never be worked. I'd ask for a transfer as a threat, but now definitely isn't the time to be making threats.

You sound like the model employee. My advice would be to speak directly to your store manager about getting a weekend off every now and then. In most stores this should not be a problem.

I would talk to them, but they're a raging asshole. I feel like if I were to talk to them, they'd chew my damn head off. I'd rather talk to my EXA, much easier to talk to. I'd rather talk to them and relay the message to the manager. I know that my time will come, but I don't know how much longer I can wait with me busting my ass day after day and getting nothing for it but a simple pat on the back. I know a lot if it has to do with my age, but if I'm doing the job better then the person in front of me.......Reward me for it. Simple logic.

Sorry to hear that. In that case I hope your EXA makes it crystal clear to the store manager that they need to schedule you more fairly.

In my store it is the EXA who makes the schedule while the store manager takes care of the management and STL schedule. If one of the employees has a scheduling issue she usually approaches the store manager who then follows up with the EXA to ensure fair scheduling is being followed.

My god the situation you are in is eerily reminiscent to mine... Are you the closing guy? Getting shafted into closing 4-5 days a week? You say you have little to no SIMS experience which is the only difference between us. I do everything our Managers do down to in store promos, call-ins, repacks, and everything in between. Suck it up and talk to your SM sure they can be assholes.(Mine told me the reasoning behind his decision not to make me an STL was the other people wouldn't respect me... lol) but, I can almost guarantee you it'll be worth it.

Hey mikey what are your intentions with walgreens? I was in a very similar position to you and I just asked for a sit down meeting with my SM and asked for a promotion. I dont know if he even barely knows me but he knew my work and said I'd be great for a promotion and has me doing reset/revisions from now on to get a better handle on the telxon before my promotion to management. Whether it be keyholder or whatever it may be. You may think your SM is not that nice but if you show intrest in your work and approach your SM I think youll like the results.

My situation exactly. Close 4 days a week. They don't need me mornings until guess what???? Oh, look at that, it's truck day and the head photo isn't capable of unloading truck. Now lets use that kid for his abilities of being able to lift heavy things. I could do everything right the entire day, but the one time I forget to do something simple like empty a trash can, I become the shittiest person to work there or something. Because I've set the bar so high, the second I go even 1/100th of a notch below it, my vision of them in their minds just wipes everything good out of it and replaces it with one mistake.
