I ask ever customer if they would like to try our new item and they will say not today or I'm on a diet. The jobs in our rural county is nil. Everyone drives out of town for good paying jobs. Now all their extra cash is going in the gas tank. Our manager posted a sign that says suggestive sales is part of our job and if we don't like that part she can find someone else who does. It makes you nervous and it makes you feel like you are being threatened. I like my job but I won't brow beat a customer to buy. I ask in a nice way and when they say no I don't keep on pestering them. Can you be fired for not selling items. I do try. Thanks,

Please stop over worrying. If you at least try then you have no problem. In my dept alone there are way too many so call suggestive sale items to mention. Besides it depends on what the suggestive sale is. Batteries sometimes will sell better than candy. You cant make them buy.
So far the last 10-12 years... heres what works for me...on everything --smile-shake your head
"yes".. say will do!....then go about your business.
Least your making the effort.

You can get fired for not asking because it is a job expectation; you cannot be fired if you're asking, but people just aren't buying. Good luck. I know Suggestive Sell can be tough when it feels like 9 out of 10 customers say no, but you never know who is going to say yes.

We work in retail, selling things is what we do. Like mentioned above, if you ask you are fine. If you are not doing well selling items, try a different strategy that works for you. Suggestive selling will reflect in your review when it comes time for a raise, so do try.

If you are asking every single customer, you're doing your job. If 9 out of 10 customers turn you down, if you ring 200 customers during your shift you will still sell 20 items. The problem people run into is they don't do their job - asking every customer - they only end up asking 40 or 50 people out of the 200 they ring up, therefore they only sell 4 or 5 items.

I remember way back when I was a cashier... Pushing those shitty walgreens batteries was always fun. I think I almost got written up when a guy who was buying a few honeybuns asked "Why the fuck would I want batteries with this?" and I replied "Because you may have a life outside of obesity". Good times.

I love how Walgreens thinks they put an emphasis on suggested sells then counter act that by putting something else similar on sale that's a more attractive value. Case in point right now Reese's peanut butter cups are one of the front end suggested sells 69 cents each or 3 for 2 dollars. Yet they have the gall to have a sale this week nestle candies 49 cents. Guess which one i sold the more of this week . I'm not a miracle worker i can't spin a reeses when Hefty Harry and Helga already have a basket of Butterfingers and Crunch bars !

True Suggestive sells don't pay much, but I have cashiered at several places that make you say would you like a hot apple pie w/ this meal...and you do't get that nickle.

Suggestive sells work, they bring more money to the store plus you make an extra $5 -$50 bucks a pay check if you can figure out how sell them, askyour manager to move the Pepsi cooler next to the register to help seel the dew this month, maybe the basket of reecee's are in the wrong spot,

Lol I asked my SM about placing a couple pepsis in the coke cooler and he didn't even rebut with "Only Coke merchandise can be in there". He just said to focus more on the chocolates.

At least this guy knows his stuff. 16+ years with the company and is consistently in the bottom 5 for suggestive sales.

Try working in cos. Where the items are $25.00 a pop! Candy is easier. All our suggestive items are usually at least $9.99! And 20 A day expected? Really?

Now they are asking us to ask each customer for their email address besides the suggestive sale, I guess the email box at the register can not speak for it self.

@deej your right it is hard to get people that would use a can of RAID for hair spray - contraceptive jelly for toast- wd 40 for make up remover as long as it was a buck 99 with a rr -to even think about spending 20 bucks for a product -its tuff ! With that said every once in a while a person with great taste- and a desire to look great can happen.Be happy you are even able to work your cos dept- the store I just left from - the Cos girls end up on front check out 24-7 - and no one can figure out why cos sales are down...

Yeh they may buy candy- but nail polish that costs $9.00? And Saturdates! try selling women's hair color to bald black guys!I wouldn't buy it if I was them! I don't want someone always being directly inside the door to a store trying to sell me items. And I don't even have the candy or gum at my counter.

Honestly at my store none of the customers seem annoyed when I suggest a candy bar. I get a lot of no's, but they thank me for asking them.

My favorite day ever? I suggested snickers to a woman, and she went 'My husband loves snickers' And bought twenty or so. xD

But my SM doesn't really threaten us like the one mentioned above. He writes notes on the list of how we're doing, either 'I know we can do better than this, candy is easy." or thanking people when they have good days.

Honestly if you just make it a casual suggestion, maybe throw out that its on sale it makes them consider it, and if they don't get it this time they might next.:)

My boss is a d**k . He fusses me for low suggestive sales but i also make the most . He told me he would be interviewing more ppl , basically telling me i would be terminated . It bothered me but i soon learned the store has a freeze until March , so he needs me more than i need him . Its tough selling candy to diabetics ... It is a drug store at the end of the day , so candy isnt really at the top of the list .

To fed up, I find that if I ask everyone you may get 10 or more out of one hundred. My customers will sometimes buy five or six. It is part of our job to sell and ever little bit helps on our pay check. I like to make a game of it and I set a goal everyday. Sometimes I reach my goal and sometimes I don't. If you are new at this give it time you will learn. Thanks, I hope this helped.
