I am MGT. Tonight I had 2 customers in the store at closing time. I locked the side doors and left the front 2 open so they could leave. As one was checking out a man shoots in the front door, practically running. So, I let him because I figure he is in a hurry.

The second customer leaves and I close the doors and make the announcement that we are closed, blah, blah, blah. 5 minutes later he is STILL shopping so I approach him and ask if he needs help finding anything. He asks where the deoderant is and I tell him where and remind him we are closed.

He yells at me that he heard my announcement the first time and asked if I rush all of my customers. Ugh. I told him no, but we were closed and was just trying to help him. He asks for my name and corp numner. I go to the front and write it down for him and wait.

He finally comes up and keeps yelling at me to get out of his face...I am at the door and he is at the register. He complains about "young people being promoted too quickly." To this, I reply that I am 42 years old and was worked hard for my promotion., He tells me again to go away and get away from him.

I told him I was not going anywhere because I am the manager and have to lock the doors. When I went to the office, I turned on the monitor and he sat in the parkinglot at the doors for about 4-5 minutes. I was about to call the cops when he finally left.

I am concerned now. Should I have just shut up? Or, was he just out to start a fight to begin with? I am not a confrontational person. I am 5'1"...115 pounds. So, I am not a threatening figure.

I could care less really about him calling corp and complaining but starting Monday we will have a new store manager and this is NOT how I want to start off with a new boss.

Was I wrong to offer him help???

Sounds to me as if you handled yourself as professionally as you could in that situation..........

Customers are not always right as we have been told a million times. If you kept your mouth shut and didn't say a thing about you closing, he will just carry on like he fucking own the place. At the end of the day, you and your entire staff would be in overtime, something the company frowns upon right now. That is what I will do, and that is what I always do. But, as per giving a reply to his comment about young people being promoted, I wouldn't even bother. There is no point in relating the story of your life to a complete stranger with no actual interest in knowing who you are. Don't fret about it, I think you did the right thing.

You try to do your best. Do not worry about him. He is one of people who do not have manners and respect and did not notice that you did favor to him. I would probably call cops on him myself as soon as he start being disrespectfull. I would tell my store manager in advance what happen even before complain is in. And for future I would tell customer that we closed but if he need something in hurry I would try to help him find otherwise I would not let him in because it may not be even safe.

Just a typical text-book difficult customer that everyone will have from time to time.

Consider it as finally having your cherry broken to that and feel good that you handled everything right and know not to let it get to you next time.

If they complain, they might get a $10 gift card out of it just because the customer is always right.
Then they'll figure out ways to get more from the store until eventually the SM tells them they can't have any anymore.

We had a customer who complained to corporate asking for a gift card, because the cashier who was checking her out had a really red face which meant that the cashier was angry with her and she felt uncomfortable.

The cashier just had a complexion that made her face look red.
