in my district there have been alot of exa postions that were not filled. i can see the rewiring of the exa program through out walgreens. walgreens will only have one exe for every 1 to 4 stores not all stores will have an exa. only mgt's that are very close becoming a store manager will be promted to exa's. wanted to know if this is happening everywere.

Is it even worth it to work for this company with a college degree anymore? I am currently working to get out, just look at it, an accountant makes about 40k out of college, an engineer 50k, etc... compare the salaries to other professions and you'll see that we are vastly underpaid for the work and abuse we tolerate.

While I continue to go in and work each day at Walgreens, I look at it as a job now. This is just another reason why you should no longer attempt to get promoted but instead look for another career and use Walgreens to your advantage.

Yeah, it's gonna be damn near impossible to get promoted in the coming years. Our district is apparently looking for 4-6 MGTs to go to the ADSM classes this summmer....there's over 30 applicants.

What's even better is we have a brand new DM who doesn't actually know any of the MGTs, and a bunch of MGTs just recently got transferred to new stores so their store managers won't know enough about them to stick up for them. Fun stuff.

I'm guessing this year's promotions will be decided strictly on seniority and college degrees. Sounds fair.

My area is holding ADSM classes in July, we are not holding people back.

Gmen, there not holding people back there just not filling all store with exa's. we have about 30 stores and 10 without exa's and were given only 5 slots for ADSM classes. walgreens is moving towards the needs of the company and away the needs of the store. which in the end will hold people back. were all your stores filled with exa's.

Yeah, I don't think anyone said Walgreens is holding people back. But the truth is that moving up within the company is going to be damn near impossible in the coming years.

They're looking to cut costs, meaning less EXAs.

There's less stores opening, meaning less EXAs being promoted to store manager and less new EXA spots opening.

And with the current job market, EXAs are less likely to find new employment because no one is hiring.

As I said in my last post, there's over 30 applicants in our district for EXA, and only 6 openings. And keep in mind that our district spans from the north border of WI to the south border of WI, with 40+ stores in between...so to make things even more limited, promotions will likely be influenced by where someone lives in the district compared to the needs, as obviously they're not going to promote too many people from the north if the needs are in the south(there's a 6+hour gap between our furthest apart stores lol).

Hopefully I win the crapshoot! lol

Well at least some of you have a chance to become an EXA. Unless you live in NYC, the rest of us in NY state are not having an EXA class. I've been with the company for 5 long years and now...I am making 0.70 cents more than when I started in 2004! Maybe I should just go back and redo my PPLs seeing that's what my pay is for again.

That sucks.

The ADSM interviews here were a joke. As I said before, we have a new DM so he doesn't know much about us yet. However, he asked nothing about our store-knowledge or about how to run a store, etc. Rather, it was a Walgreens recent-history quiz. It truly feels like a crapshoot.

Oh well, I had given up hope of being promoted late last winter when it seemed like they weren't doing ADSM classes this year, so at least I didn't have my hopes too high. I'll just have to make sure to brush up on my Walgreens history before next year's interviews!

They are actually trying to fill the stores with more EXAs in the coming years because we are cheaper by the hour over mgts. We also don't have to manage time and leave at 40 on the dot. There is also rumors to do away with mgts all together and switch to much cheaper "key carriers." Google some Wag blogs... some people are leaking a little too much about the future of the company.

i can tell you a horror story. on September 1st 2010, the ADSM applications were supposed to be open on the site. September came and the site was not ready, then it was supposed to be december 2011 or january 2011, still wasn't ready. then at the end of february it became available. of course the store managers never even told the mgts that it was back up and running. i was excited to fill out the approximately 45 minute application, but they cut so many people's hours, forcing me to be all over the store with projects, running photo and having to fill scripts and help with IC3 in the pharmacy, that i never even got a chance to fill the application out. everyone was always using the computer for signsplus or whatever. i wasn't even aware of the deadline or when the adsm site was up and running, so when i said today i'm gonna do it. i only go on to find the application deadline had passed. i was only 3 days late. i even emailed the adsm administrator if it were possible to still put an application in, since the site wasn't open earlier like they said it would be numerous times and that i have been waiting over a year and it would be messed up to make me wait another year, especially since no one else in my store even intended to go to adsm classes. i even told them how i've been with the company 14 years and i truly didn't know about the deadline. they knew they had put off the application twice which meant if you wanted to do the application in september like they said it would be available you couldn't do it. so is that my fault? that should've been grounds for them to reconsider accepting my application. all i got back was an e-mail saying: we appreciate your disappoint but there will be no exceptions to the deadline. you are welcome to apply again next year. what a crock of shit!!! we mgts are always having to bend or make exceptions for customers that return products not even purchased at walgreens or we have to accept expired coupons because the customer still wants to use them, but they can't make an exception for the hard working and loyal employee of 14 years. plus you can't even do the application from home. all the other job apps on the home website can be applied for except the adsm one. if i would've been able to do it from home i would've sent the app a long time ago. more and more i become more disappointed by walgreens.

continuing from my previous post. i even mentioned how i applied twice when i was at other stores and i never got an interview nor did i receive any explanation as to why i was turned down from the exa classes. they were supposed to, but never did. i also told them that whenever i applied shortly thereafter i would be transferred. which is bullshit, they do that because the store manager is too cowardly to tell you to your face as to why they don't like you, they then send you to another store, putting a bad name in for you, so when you get to the new store and mention adsm, they bullshit you and say that they haven't known you long enough etc, thus forcing you to once again miss out on another adsm class season. in which you will mostly likely be transferred again through the same cycle.

Hey do you have any write ups in the last six months? That's what's going to screw me up and I'm a damn good manager. I just had a jackass of a boss that discriminated against me. is that a possibility in your case as well?

Nyere and other prospective EXAs:

When I received the letter regarding the ADSM program, I printed off the application and took it home. I wrote down my answers to the questions at home, proofread it, and then simply typed in the answers on the computer. I knew it would be difficult to have much time to myself on the computer, so it was key to take as much of the work out of it as possible beforehand.

Due to my preparation, I'd say it took less than 10 minutes to fill out the application.

Good luck to all those who applied!

That's the thing, I never receieved a letter. I have been an MGT for 8 years and employee for 14 years and never ever got a letter.

Your MGR should have given you the letter.

Also to be frank, you missed the deadline because one way or another you did not make it a priority. To blame someone else for missing the deadline shows that at one level or another, you are not ready to run a store. Which you are expected to be able to do if you get accepted to ADSM classes - what if you get promoted to EXA, then the very next day your SM gets into a serious car accident and is out of 3 months? You'll be expected to run the show. That is why late applications are not accepted - applicants are expected to have a certain level of personal responsibility.

Hey does anyone know when we will hear about who made it to the next level as far as the interview process? Will they even contact to let us know we were not approved and why we were not?

You are wrong to tell me that I didn't make it a priority. If you really read what I posted, you would see that I said that when I tried to apply in September when they said it would be available, they pushed the opening back three times. So I was ready to do it, but they weren't ready when they said they would be. When it finally became available I hadn't even known about it. When you're the only manager, missing a photo tech, have warehouse and expected to open for IC3 in the Rx and staff hours cut you really don't get much chance. We only have one computer on top of that.

Question- who cares the most whether or not you get into ADSM? Here's a hint: it's not your DM, it's not your CL, it's not your SM. They don't really care; they've already done ADSM. It's you. You are the one who cares the most about your personal advancement, and therefore, you have to be the one to take the responsibility.

I'm not saying your DM, CL, SM don't care; they do care. But they have many other things going on, and they don't care as much as you do. I'm sure if you asked for their help, they would be more than willing to help you. Let me ask you this: did the ADSM website say roughly when applications would be open? I think it did. But even if it didn't, when 2011 rolled around did you ask your SM when apps could be taken? And if he wasn't much help, did you ask your CL? For that matter, did your CL even know you were interested? If you knew that applications were open but didn't know the deadline, did you ask anyone when the deadline might be? SM, CL? And finally, did you ask your SM for time on the computer so you could fill out the application? I don't know a SM who wouldn't make time for you on the computer if you asked for it. But I'm not sure you ever asked for it. Only you know. Only you know if you truly took responsibility for your own career.

Hopefully this is a learning experience for you, and you walk away with a renewed perspective and a better idea of what to do next time. Don't give up!

frustrated - your SM should be able tell you whether or not you've made it, once he is told.
