I am a under degreed MGT. Right now I only have a A.A.S. Business Management :Project Management. So if you are like me 34 to 50 and carry either no degree or a low level one. I have a great suggestion. About 6 months ago I started attending WGU. Its a unique not for ptofit school. Basically is skill based and the degree is recognized by a large companies and often state governments push it. Its fast to, but challenging.
Couple facts
1. Its low cost you pay per 6 month period.(no limit on credit hours you can get in that time)
2. It is setup for professional with lots of experiance, but no degree.
3. It is for you if you are a good self study.
4. Most courses run from 3k to 4k per 6 month period. Plus, most books are online and free.(financial Aid is available through the normal programs)
5. For IT they offer programs with 10 to 15 certifications.
6. HR and Business classes offer certifications to.
7. They offer MBA/MS's and I believe they recognise pre BS work experiance( this is very rare in MBA programs).
Using my courses as a example.
Major: Business Management: Information Technology
Start Date September 2011.
Credit Transfered 68 from previous degree.
Total Credit hours 128.
Finished in first 6 month period 42.

See if I had a full degree I could finish it 18 months. Thats not to shabby for a BS.

Intial costs 65.00 Application Fee.

For a limited time I am gonna open up my e-mail for refer a friend to anyone who wants to apply.
It will waive the application fee.

Send a e-mail to [email protected] with your name and your E-Mail Address so they can send you the intial e-mail information.

I get no money for this. I do get some WGU cheapo merchandise(Pens, bookmarks) not really motavating factor. I know its odd, but some people care about other people. This is a good school that I believe in. So much I am spending money out of my own pocket to talk to some IT based Vocational Classes in my state. Again I make no money off of this.

The best Store manager to ever run a store had no fancy schmancy degree. He had common sense. Good business sense. And was fair. Everyone loved "boss" he had the busiest store in the district. For over 35 years he ran that show. He was looked up to by all. Sad to see him retire. But he was a true leader. Too bad work ethics have gone down the drain. Because someone has a degree they think they can run a store. Not true. Takes waaaaay more than that!!
Having a degree may just mean the manager was a spoiled rich kid, or a kid who knew how to study. There is much more to handling a store then being spoiled or a brain. Heck, you may have a PhD, but if you lack people skills and supervisory skills, you will make a terrible manager.

I can't believe the number of negative comments. This person was offering some help and you all acted like a bunch of jealous babies. A degree helps you find a job, it won't make you a better person. A better person would have said thank you for the tip. I know that there's a lot of negative things happening at Walgreens. Is that going to define who we are? I hope that everyone who has worked hard and lost family time finds a good job. Walgreens will comne out the loser in this. Customers don't come in for the low prices, we are the highest store in town, they come in for good customer service. We are going to lose the one thing that kept customers coming back. If all the familiar faces leave we will loose a ton of business. Unless there is a turn around with this decision Mr Wasson may need a job in the future. Do they honestly think anyone can do the management job? I am not in management nor would I want to be. I have seen my managers come in when they had sick children, they knew Walgreens came first. Walgreens demands it. Lol, there won't be many dedicated employees now. Managers who loose sick days because they come in and work sick, that won't happen any more. This thing has long reaching consequences.

You are sooo correct about the customer service aspect. That's been Walgreen's market niche for a long time when compared to our competitors. Just last night a customer came in looking for butterfly closures and a finger splint. I took him directly to the area. He said, "well, you've got your competitor beat by a mile. I just came from CVS and they didn't have anyone there to show me where the first aid area was - just some clerk at the front that pointed me to a very general area. I couldn't find it so I told her I was coming over here".
