My wife recently received a letter from her new SM her that she could apply for the classes that she needed to take as a prerequisite to becoming an EXA. She has applied but is very doubtful of her chances of getting in, and rightly so. We have just relocated to the area (I am in the army) and she has just been assigned to the closest store to us(1 month) after floating around between a few stores. Another factor is that the previous SM just recently quit and she got the letter from the new SM the day the new SM started(via the DM???). I'm trying to encourage her but don't know the ins and outs of how walgreens promotions work. Here are the things I do know.

She started out as an intern and upon graduating with a B.S. in Business Management AND Human Resources Management became a ASM. She will have worked for walgreens for 2yrs in June, is proficient in every aspect of the store except Pharmacy, which she is currently in the process of becoming certified. At her previous store besides running day to day operations, she was the community events coordinator, did the work schedule, held the liquor license, and was beginning to take over the role of hiring and firing employees (she looked through applications, selected applicants for interviews, conducted interviews, hired and fired a few employees, her SM was a CL and thus not around often and there was no EXA at her store). She was in charge of the cosmetics department which doubled in sales and redline sales during her tenure. She also doubled suggestive sales. BUT all of this was at her previous store, before she transferred.

Anyone have an idea of realistic her chances of being selected are? She works hard so I want to encourage her and keep her positive but i don't know how walgreens operates. Any information is appreciated.

In the application she should be able to go into detail about some of her accomplishments in the past. If selected for an interview, this would also be an opportunity to touch on some on her previous work experience with Walgreens.

She should also keep in mind that many of the areas of this company is all political. It's about who you know and whose but you're willing to kiss. I know that the information according to store net states all the requirements and also states that the decision as far as approval is based on community leader and district manager. However I was told by my SM yesterday morning that the manager you have worked for in the past year has the most influence on being accepted or not. I don't know what the reasons were for your wife's previous SM to resign but with her having a completely manager it will be a challenge for him to give an accurate testimony as to what type of manager your wife is having to have never really worked with her before. I hope previous manager quit on good terms and can hopefully be a good reference for your wife and how hard she worked for him. I am not trying to discourage you, but keep in mind that are several factors in her situation that could determine the outcome of her promotion. Good luck to her and let us know how it goes and if she gets it!:)

Thanks both of you for the input. Her original SM, who she has been with up until Jan 2011(18months) is still with walgreens, in fact he was the one who helped her to get transferred. Her second SM was at her new location and only her SM for about a month(my wife floated for a month and a half), and then the new one just started last week. Hopefully they will contact her original SM. We'll let you know how it goes.
