If you work at Walgreens then you know by now that at the beggining of next year you will pay an extra $25 on your medical premium if you are a smoker. If you are not a smoker you will be inconvienanced to see a doctor and pay the $25 copay to prove to this company that you do not smoke. Walgreens may have you to believe that this is the choice of the medical insurance company, but it is not. This if Walgreens way of making an extra buck in thier pocket. It's another way of telling their employees that they shouldn't have a choice about their lifestyle, that we should sacrifice our money, our stress, and our way of living for their company. Although, Mr. Rein would want you to believe that he has your best interest at hand as employees, he will gladly sell tobacco to non-employees, but charge you a premium because you work for him. If this is not discrimination at it's best, then I believe all you smokers at Walgreens should rise up, file your class action and collect at least another $20 million, possibly $200 million for this infraction. In the meantime I encourage all of you who do not agree with this rate hike, to drop your medical insurance if it is possible. I realize that if you have a family, or loved one that need to see doctors regularly, this may seem impossible. But as there is an annual test to prove that you don't smoke, I'm sure you'll figure out a way around it. Don't let this company intimidate you. They may make their money on customers, but without workers they have nothing. It's time Walgreens looks at employees interests instead of their pocketbooks!

i believe several employers are taking similar steps to help LOWER the cost of healthcare. why should those that live a healthy lifestyle be subjected to a higher premium to cover those that choose to damage their cardiovascular and respiratory systems? good for you walgreens..it's time to reward the people that make healthy choices.

Several employers may be taking the same steps to lower healthcare costs, but those employers do not sell cigarettes. In my eyes this is a hugh conflict of interest.
It is wrong for a company to acknowledge that something is unhealthy and than turn around and continue to sell that unhealthy product to make a profit!

Yes, and I choose not to shop at a company that speaks out of both sides of it's mouth.
Smoking is bad if you are an employee but good if you are a profit producing customer.
What a joke!

It is a damn shame. At our store it is the non-smokers who are constantly calling in! We are at least paying for our insurance and prescriptions and not screwing the gov. by getting it for free. I see Walgreens employees getting free insurance and prescriptions from the State claiming that Walgreens doesn't pay enough. Gee something is really wrong here!

I remember this being instituted before I quit (greatest decision ever) Was it just smoking, or all forms of tobacco use (ie..dip/chew)?(and Walgreens doesn't pay enough)

FREEDOM!!!!!! This once again strips away FREEDOM from Americans! We are forced to pay for health insurance, and paying so much that they cannot even use it. We are forced to pay for automobile insurance, or end up treated like criminals. Coming soon: FORCED LIFE INSURANCE, FORCED DENTAL INSURANCE! Americans will soon have 100% of their checks going to insurances and need second jobs to meet REAL NEEDS: food, water, shelter!

Promote the legalization of thc & open your own dispensary-- many tech moguls are looking into this for the many medicinal purposes--it's coming to Wisconsin soon.
