It wasn't speculation. Not more than a month or so ago I read in the Field Transformation Guide that they wouldn't start hiring external candidates with college degrees until 2014.

And I'm sure that they are looking for only those that are between the ages of 20 to 25. Age discrimination, alive and well at Wags.

...and will be willing to come in at $16/hr which is a bargain compared to the many quality MGT's who got bent over in the application process.

Some text from the Walgreens website under careers:

Job Description

Assistant Store Management Trainee

...
Walgreens has something for everyone who wants to build a successful career. Our Assistant Store Manager in Training (ASM-T) Program offers a unique development opportunity where you are trained to be a leader in a Walgreens store! Because we want you to succeed in your retail career, we've created a comprehensive, leadership program that will equip you to become a Walgreens Assistant Store Manager, and then a Store Manager, and from there — depending on your career goals — move into higher levels of retail management at Walgreens. Our ASM-T participants may remain in the program for up to 2 years receiving on-going development to prepare for an advancement opportunity. However, this area has been identified to have a greater need for leadership roles, so with successful performance there is a possibility of advancing within 16 weeks.
...
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s Degree OR High School Diploma/GED and one year of retail supervisory experience
· Willingness to work a flexible schedule including extended days, evenings, and weekend hours

Preferred Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s Degree
· Prior retail supervision experience
· PTCB Certification

By the way, I noticed that "store manager" is not listed in the positions under "In-Store Opportunities" at

http://careers.walgreens.com/career-areas/in-...

Also, the pay range for the position is listed in the job description and depends on the town.

I wonder if some areas did not get enough internal applicants for asmt?

I don't think this was any secret, and those of you who think it was are mistaken. At the end of,my interview my DM asked what questions I had and I asked several questions I went in prepared with. One of them was about external candidates. I was told 'excellent question' and and open and honest discussion insued... One of the points being that the next phase would be for external candidates starting withing a few Weeks. We talked about a bunch of other stuff too, but I guess the moral of what I am trying to say... WAGS isnt being secretive or sneaky... Just know where to go for information and it'll be right there. Those of you who say 'WAGS lies again' are just not open to hearing the truth. You hear the negative because thats what you want to hear. And for the record, for anyone reading this who hasn't been tainted, WAGS is a great company to work for. Don't let a few disgruntled people influence your views.

Will they be only hiring externally from this point on? Or will they still promote from within?

I haven't look at the Field Transformation Guide on Storenet for some time. Does anyone know what it says right now about the timeline for hiring external candidates for ASMt?(It might have changed recently.)

I should clarify...for corporate and district positions, will they only hire from colleges? Or will Walgreens continue to promote from within?

Walgreens would have preferred to fill the positions with qualified candidates from within. In most every district I've talked to, there are a shortage of candidates for open positions, particularly for the 2nd rd of hiring.

Most MGTs are not qualified for ASMT.

The last sentence is so sad that someone already basically performing the job wouldn't be qualified. Shouldn't we have gotten rid of people who really are supposedly this awful long before now?

If nothing else, this tells you which districts had a shortage of internal applicants.

One of the districts I saw suffers from being very widely spread out amongst two states. Most of its stores are in small towns in these two states. That would greatly reduce the ability to have a good pool of internal candidates who are potentially willing to relocate as they move through their promotions. It's probably an ongoing hiring headache for quality people too.

I agree. I just wonder if when the time comes to fill positions, if they'll look internally first. Or, if they're gonna go straight to college campuses.

College kids must be having a wet dream about working in retail. I hope the job situation gets better, and we shall see how far wag gets with this plan.

I know im a college student, but I'm still going to say this. I hope no smartass kid comes out of college and starts telling our experienced managers on how to do this and do that. I've seen too many times where I snooty brat out of college tells a 20 year employee on how to set up an attractive display. I haaaate that. Be well.
