Delaware refinery likely exempt from pollution plan

Delaware's participation in the nation's first regional effort to control greenhouse gas emissions through a cap-and-trade system probably won't include one of the state's biggest polluters.

One of the basic faults of 'cap and trade' systems is that political influence can exempt companies or ensure the issuance of 'pollution rights' to match their current levels, thus making reductions meaningless and in fact giving the existing high pollution companies a 'barrier to entry' against more efficient competitors.

As such, the "carbon tax" is the only way to ensure fair markets while at the same time reducing emissions on a relatively 'red tape and influence peddling free' basis.

Carbon dioxide is necessary for life on this planet and not a pollutant.

Huge energy tax that will accomplish nothing but suck money out of the economy and give it to the government to waste. Will it help the environment? Not likely, as only a healthy economy can afford to develop advanced technologies. With energy costs so high, anyone that can will be using woodstoves this winter. Smoke and particulate emissions increase. Oh, wood is made of carbon, too.

Watch our elected representatives purposely cripple our economy just to get themselves a tad more power.

They should be ashamed.

Well, there was life before the CO2/Oxygen atmsophere and it still exists in the ocean depths but for the main part CO2 is necessary to the CURRENT ecology.

Water, CO2 etc all can be pollutants. Pollutants are defined by whether they are in the WRONG place or in the WRONG quantity. Water is a 'pollutant' to gas engines. CO2 is a pollutant to climate stability.

I have no idea why such a simple concept is so hard for some people to understand.
