United Airlines Lost My Friend's 10 Year Old Daughter And Didn't Care

There are 145 comments on the bobsutton.typepad.com story from Aug 14, 2012, titled United Airlines Lost My Friend's 10 Year Old Daughter And Didn't Care. In it, bobsutton.typepad.com reports that:

United was flying Phoebe as an unaccompanied minor on June 30th, from San Francisco to Chicago, with a transfer to Grand Rapids. No one showed-up in Chicago to help her transfer, so although her plane made it, she missed the connection. Most crucially, United employees consistently refused to take action to help assist or comfort Phoebe or to help her parents locate her despite their cries for help to numerous United employees.

Wow, you're all heart. Unaccompanied kids have been flying for decades. It happens all the time. Kids visiting grandparents or moving or many other scenarios. The parents paid more and trusted professionals to do their jobs. They were ignored.

Yep. Pretend that Unaccompanied Minor travel is something that was just invented and the the world was different back in 'the good old days' that never existed. Typical of your generation.

Lack of customer service. Typical of THIS generation. Customer service is a dying part of business in this time of "make of the money you can and screw the customer if you have to" corporate world.

Now this case might be 100% real ..but. Who really knows for sure.

It's very hard to pass judgement without knowing all the facts.

I find it very unlikely that United Airlines employees would not help any child...system is just not designed in this manner.

United Airlines didn't lose anyone... When you purchase ticket, it's your responsibility too ask staff for help.

If the child not prepared too fly, why would the parents send or place their child in such a position.

Way too many gypsies types scammers today.

Blame clearly goes to the parents.

Unless the child can produce evidence that employee acted in manner as you state.

I find it hard too swallow....

It should be considered child neglect to place them by themselves on a flight.

If it's my obligation and duty to share in the care of the village children, I have a right to get them off their ass and make them mow my grass.

You're just too ignorant.

Children traveling unaccompanied pay a full adult fare.

An additional service charge is collected to cover extra handling required when an unaccompanied child travels. Please confirm this charge when placing your reservation.

There is a $99.00 service fee required for all unaccompanied children traveling alone on all flights to any destination.

The unaccompanied minor service charge may be paid at the time of reservation, or prior to departure at a United check-in counter. Travel agents may also collect the unaccompanied minor service charges.

You are a horrible parent if you trust a business to take care of your 10 year old girl on a flight across the country. Even if you paid.

Yes, ultimately the company is liable. But do you really want to take it that far? With your 10 year old girl?

Read the news much about molesters, kidnappers, child rapists?

I would never let my child travel alone, unless they were at least 13 years old. Even then, I'd only book a direct flight and have a family member or friend waiting for them. Then again, that's just me.

Major problems that required over-and-above customer service have always been a 1 in 100 situation. What's changed is the attitude of companies.

In the past, companies knew that taking care of that 1 in 100 situation was good for business and public relations. Today, companies say taking care of that 1 in 100 situation costs too much, and that they can afford to lose 1% of customers.(That wasn't always true, of course. Car makers got away with blaming "the nut behind the wheel" and avoiding responsibility until Ralph Nader came along.)

United Airlines decided that a lost girl wasn't worth the "return on investment" (ROI), the cost of time and labour to find her. Basic decency isn't a concern to them, and if she had died, they would try to absolve themselves of responsibility by blaming the parents.

I'd like to hear the other side of the story before United is blamed. There are always 2 sides of every story.

As the wife of an airline pilot (not United)I find this story highly suspect.

I dont think it is that suspect. People get busy and think someone else will "take care of it". I don't get the bit about blaming gypsies!

The air line that really sucks is AA.

Would rather ride the bus then fly with these morons again!!!!

Could explain why they are bankrupt.
