Wind Promises Blackouts as Obama Strains Grid With Renewables

There are 10 comments on the www.bloomberg.com story from Aug 8, 2009, titled Wind Promises Blackouts as Obama Strains Grid With Renewables . In it, www.bloomberg.com reports that:

President Barack Obama's push for wind and solar energy to wean the U.S. from foreign oil carries a hidden cost: overburdening the nations electrical grid and increasing the threat of blackouts.

The funding Obama devoted to get high-voltage lines ready for handling the additional load of alternative supplies is less than 5 percent of the $130 billion that power users, producers and the U.S. Energy Department say is needed. Without more investment, cities can’t tap much of the renewable energy from remote areas, said Jon Wellinghoff, chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The Energy Department’s latest round of loan guarantees, announced July 29, underscored the government’s emphasis on alternative energy over the transmission system itself. The department said it will provide as much as $30 billion for renewable projects, compared with $750 million to increase the reliability of the nation’s power network.

Only if profiteers are allowed to 'play' the field by blocking grid upgrades to cause collapse of green energy startups that depend on it for their markets.

That is an American infrastructure issue, supposed to keep up with the times and technology - not wait for critical levels of safety and claim no immediate resources available to deal with the situation, another y2k type loophole?... Good Ole Boys Syndrome

True. The power grid needs to be a public monopoly with sufficient 'reserve' and 'storage capacity' to deliver service regardless of the power providers. It can't be left to profit motives.

Isn't the planet's impending doom from evil CO2 the real emergency here?
Climate Change is about predicting the end of the world for "life on this planet as we know it"-IPCC. Or is it all just an energy worry gone mad? Is it just a media issue gone mad? How did we let it get so insane level to where we are now willing to give money to politicians who promise to lower the temperature of the earth with it?
How will this mass insanity end?

One of the many problems with wind is that the generator is know where near the load. Another is transmission loss. Which means your wind generators have to produce even more power to equal what that coal fired plant can deliver because it was closer.

This isn't the first time this has been noted. They were having the exact same problems with wind back in the late seventies/early eighties. Looks lie the problem still hasen't ben solved.

Until they figure out how to get the power to the user or the product to market it is going to be a bust.

I'm all for saving money but I won't do it under the Greenzi premis of saving our planet from a CO2 myth of doomsday.
No way! History will not be kind to us scaring our children like this.

Ya know what the best source of "renewable energy" is?

It has to be the infrared Back Radiation from the atmosphere that AGW'ers say is heating up the Earth!

It is supposed to be available Day and Night.

You can see it right here in Trenberth's Energy Balance diagram.

Earth's Energy Balance
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/th...

The infrared Back Radiation absorbed by the Earth is 324 w/m^2.

The Solar energy absorbed by the Earth is only 168 w/m^2.

The Back Radiation energy is about 193% GREATER than the Solar energy and is available DAY and NIGHT!

The Back Radiation energy could easily be received by standard Solar Ovens (a parabolic mirror that has a focal point).
-----
I wonder why the AGW'ers never, ever mention using this GREAT ENERGY SOURCE?

Probably because the Back Radiation never reaches the Earth's surface....heat energy can't flow from the Colder atmosphere to a Warmer Earth.
That would violate the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics.

So the Back Radiation can't heat the Earth or be used as an Energy source.

ACTUAL MEASUREMENTS done by the Physics dept. of Brigham Young confirm that the Back Radiation DOES NOT REACH THE EARTH'S SURFACE!

You can't run an industrial economy if you depend on the winds.

All I saw was things that were suppose to make you feel and show that you care like you were doing something while parting with large quanities of money. Kind of like the woman who buys a new power saving clothes dryer to replace the clothes line in the back yard.
