Why the requirement to send mail the same day you print postage from home

I am trying to send a bunch envelopes to my mother so she can send me material that arrives in the mail at her house.
I wanted to print out postage so I can put it on a bunch of envelopes I will send her for this purpose.
I find out that when I print out postage it has to be mailed the same day I print it out.
Makes no sense to me, except that the USPS seems to be going out of its way to make everything more and more complicated.
