Saturn the GM Flop

Erwin, NC

#45 Oct 1, 2009
GM first announced its Saturn brand in 1985 as an ambitious attempt to beat back the growing threat of Japanese automakers.
Launched as a "different kind of car company," it built its own vehicles in its own factory and sold them at dealerships where haggling was not allowed. Sales grew quickly after the 1990 delivery of its first vehicle, and proud customers were invited to once-a-year reunions at the Spring Hill headquarters
But GM executives have said that the brand was never profitable for any sustained period. In 2004, GM changed its relationship with Saturn, more closely incorporating it into the company as a whole and beginning to use Spring Hill to make other types of vehicles.
Today, the Tennessee factory makes the Chevrolet Traverse SUV but produces no Saturns.
In Shedding Saturn and Hummer, GM moves a step closer to its plans to be a smaller, more agile carmaker. Together, they represent just over 500 dealerships that GM would otherwise have wound-down as it moves toward reducing its total dealer count to 3,600 from 6,100.
GM has notified about 1,350 other dealers that it will not renew their contracts when they expire in October 2010. GM's chief financial officer, Ray Young, said Tuesday that he expects the remaining dealers to close on their own volition because of the difficult sales market.

Ah! I've got a bone to pick with you then. How come you made the GM cars so crappy that they rust right out from another you? I don't think I'd advertise being a part of that. Was Saturn held back due to jealousy?

Foreign Carmakers: More "Domestic" Than Detroit

http://www.usnews.com/blogs/flowchart/2009/05...
Before long, you'll be more likely to get an American-made car by buying an import brand instead of a Ford, General Motors, or Chrysler vehicle. New data show that for the first time ever, foreign-based carmakers are poised to build more vehicles in the United States than the Detroit 3.

The American automakers have obviously hit the skids, with Chrysler in bankruptcy and GM headed that way. Detroit's woes are accelerating a market share decline that's been underway for years. And now, forecasting firm CSM Worldwide predicts that in 2010, foreign-based automakers like Toyota and Honda will build more cars in the United States than the so-called domestic automakers.

That's a touchy issue for Detroit—and for President Obama, whose administration could end up spending $100 billion or more to help resuscitate GM, Chrysler, and other players in the U.S. auto industry. On April 30, while announcing the Chrysler bankruptcy, Obama made a pitch on Detroit's behalf. "If you are considering buying a car," he said, "I hope it will be an American car."

Obama may have to hold another press conference to explain exactly what an American car is. The Detroit 3 have long skirted the issue by referring to "North American" production—which includes Canada and Mexico, where they build about one-third of their cars. The slick new Chevy Camaro, for instance, is made in Canada. The popular Ford Fusion sedan is assembled in Mexico. Including Canada and Mexico allows the Detroit 3 to say they build most of their cars in North America.

Some Japanese and European automakers build cars in Canada and Mexico too, but it's a much smaller portion of their overall production. And while the Detroit 3 have been closing American factories, foreign-based automakers have been adding U.S. manufacturing capacity, mostly in the south...

GM will be making all of their cars in Antarctica with Pygmy slaves if that’s what it takes to keep their pension checks rolling.

Here is a horror story

My Saturn had a malfunction at 49,000 mi.that nearly ended in tragedy while taking my children to school.
Saturn admitted they had had a problem, or a number of problems with the 1997 model.Offered to fix the problem that these models had if I would pay $1,000 of the cost. They would chip in $500. Big of them.
After months of haggling and no solution in sight, I took it to a reliable indepent diagnostic center. They found a problem with the computer, gave me a printout and told me Saturn should honor it under the warranty. They did no such thing and told me they couldn't give me a printout of thier diagnostics because they don't print them.
I traded the wretch in and got a Mazda in 2001 and it has been a great car.
Glad to see Saturn get what they deserve at last.
Also, a mechanic at the dealership admitted that they weren't supposed to allow anything in the service side out with less that $1,000 in repair charges.

Oh yea! My hubby worked on a Saturn today that was several years old with over 300,000 miles on it and the body of the car looked great. That's a real horror story.
Your hubby wasn't wearing his reading glasses. It actually was 30,000 miles. A Saturn that needs repairs at 30,0000 miles isn't uncommon.

have you ever thought, Why does gm need so many brands? I was looking at the crossovers, at a gm dealer, they had the Buick, GM, and Saturn all 3 in a line, exact same price for the base models. exact same frame and features(*on the base models). So why have 3 different brands? the only thing different is the factory and the sticker.
They are also all made at the same factory, There is also the Chevy Traverse but it looks a bit different

America has become a sorry state and Minneasota leads the way! Capitalism has made Americans lazy and let their money do the thinking. Problem is money doesn't think and many people who own money just want to be conservative; continue to make a profit at a great percentage doing the same old thing. Conservative labor, management, and administrations are equally guilty of attemping to maintain the status quo rather than go with the flow. When a system doesn't learn to accomodate real time growth and changes you have what we have economicially today. I can blame the econo;mics policies that may many Americans rich over the recent administration, polices that created thousands of new millionaires and billionaires but the truth is that I, like millions of Americans, want to be; millionaires and billionaires too. You can say the policies of the policical powers to be crashed the econimy. Others can say the economic system was burdened by the weight of entiltements and caved in the system. We have become a sorry nation, not because of any single or combination of the reasons above nor any other notion as to the reasons for America's current predictiment, but due to our stupid belief in smart money!

Curiously, it appears as if Penske may have actually drove the death nell to the Saturn Brand while preserving Saturns assets for future rock bottom sales. Albeit like Edsel the Saturn was beloved by many, it just was not a popular Brand. Heck, you could put a great new program in Springs Hills facilities, with cheap experienced labor, pennies on the dollar assets, and the Bears would be roaring to be Bulls!

Shame is, were the employess of Saturn and it's dealers and their employees were to invest pennies out their dollars in buying Saturn "properties" and secure their own resources it would be considered by conservatives to be socialism. The Smart Money is not to use your money.

Collectivist Drone,

Union Autoworkers represented the Lion's share of American Taxpayers for decade's, paying taxes that carried American though the Second World War; supplantmenting the Union's figthing force's oversea's; paying for the nation's roadway and highway infrastructure; as well as the major player's in paying the national debt's for it seems like forever, until recent. I'm certain without even knowing you, that Union Autoworkers are, even now, a larger group of Taxpayers than any taxpaying group including any you are likely to belong too (other than Walmark retail employees!)

I'd say that if you want to become a millionaire or a billionaire you ought to learn to spell first. Then you'll have to get out of that union because as a working monkey, you aren't going to get wealthy. Maybe if you had the intelligence and work ethic to form your own business you'd have a chance, but I doubt it.
