=.= they said they went to the site and looked but could not find a link.

I had the same problem. Where's the link to register the card online???! Can American express gift cards even be registered for online use?

Amex Gift Cards don't need to be activated or registered. They come ready to use. If a website is giving some message that the card needs to be activated then the website is making a mistake. Call the phone# on the back of your gift card for additioal help.

call 877-AXP-GIFT and wait until they tell you to press 3 for questions about a declined purchase and it will go to a representative then ask about registering

Why can't they let me do it online? Never had a gift that was so much hassle before I could use it. They should warn people before buying an American Express gift card about the hassle.

Visa giftcards can be registered online. When is American Express going to come in the 21st century? Never had a gift that was so much work before I could use it.:(:(:(:(:

Good post, as are most replies. Just to be clear - as you said, activation is not necessary. But you CAN register a gift card at www.americanexpress.com/gift . This does 2 things for you (if either matters to the bearer of the card).

1. if the card is lost or stolen (and the thief hasn't already used it) you can call and cancel the gift card. They will send you a new one with the current balance.
2. this allows a person to also use the card to make web purchases

These benefits were given to me by a cust svc rep at AMEX Gift Cards - if it is incorrect it is because the agent didn't know what they are talking about. I DO know that you can go to the above URL to check the balance left on the card.

The link www.americanexpress.com/gift will only show the balance .. You need to call and register the card over the phone for online purchases...

Also maybe not a concern for most folks , but neeed to wait at least 70 minutes after purchasing the card..

I purchased my American Express gift card 2 days ago in Canada. Tonight I went to make an online purchase and it said that there was an error processing my purchase. I went to the american express website and and the balance said 100, which is what it was when i purchased it. I then researched online and found this. I called, followed the instructions and selected option 3. The automated response then said that if I wish to speak with a customer service rep, I am to select 0. I pressed 0, and then I heard "your call cannot be completed as dialed, please hang up and try your call again." Several attempts later, I am sitting here bashing my head off the keyboard. Never did I think I would get into such a frustrated state over this.

You must call this number this number--->877-297-4438. Choose option #5 the first time. Then just wait until the automated voice transfers you to a live customer service person. Tell them you received a American Express gift card from where ever and then tell them you need to register it to be able to make purchases online. As soon as your card is registered, you will be able to make purchases online. It a lot of unnecessary info out there on how to do this. It's as simple as making this phone call. I hope this helps!

If you follow what Treblenes said, it literally takes about 3 minutes to do. Thanks for the info!

Well Lee if you are speaking to someone who speaks the same language as you do it might take 3 minutes but the guy I spoke to could not hear or spell and he put me on hold for several minutes to activate 3 cards. BUT, you and Treblnes are correct it was not really a big deal. If I had read the thick booklet that came with the cards I might have known what to do sooner. I did not know I needed to register the cards for online use till Clinique locked up all my money on one card while they "verified" me (which they could not do). It took 10 days from start to finish to get my money back on the card. I am all set now though. AMEX should print this 877-297-4438 phone number on the cards and should have a menu option early in the call to press a number for registering the card rather than having to go through the menu to get to a human.

I just think that the American Express company should just go out of business. Besides, Visa is better and easier to use across the board.

However, American Express gift cards do not have a monthly fee, like Visa/Mastercard which is the only reason I bought it in the first place.

I bought an American Express gift card at Wal Mart, RELUCTANTLY because I've had trouble using them online before. Went to use the card, said security code was no good, it was freaking 3 digit code, pretty sure I didn't screw that up. So I went to register the card, didn't think I had to because it said ready to use. I got "error: we're sorry your card could not be registered: please call.." Well I have a pre-paid phone so I can't call.

Needless to say, AMEX...I will NEVER, EVER use any of your cards or services again.
