Website 'for cowards' causes hurtful gossip in Mountain Grove, draws national attention

Full story: KYTV Springfield

It's been said that nothing travels faster than gossip. Thanks in part to a community website, the gossip in this small town in the Ozarks has taken a decidedly nasty and public turn.

Hey Kevin, good to see you. If people use the system to remove unwanted or frivolous postings, there wouldn't be a need for the attacks from individuals in the paper media looking to make names for themselves. In essence, they are trolls themselves and also help build topix membership. There is good and bad to everything is my point.

Hi DD! You too! I think this story is sad. No one should be treated that way. No one should be made to feel like they need to move from their home just because someone else is a low life coward.

Your right. I have administered a lot of vBulletin forums in my time and one thing that was never allowed on any of the forums I have been involved with is no posting of private information on an individual. It only leads to trouble. It will take a violent act for Topix to rethink how they handle private info. Short of that, if people are intimidated by mere text on a screen, they shouldn't be here period. The mind games have some good players and some worthy opponents. The abusers are another story.

I have seen people abused that were never on Topix. I have also seen people who's only goal is to get someones personal info. Yet they are never banned.

“We're not so happy about seeing things where people are talking smack about each other, and, when people inform us of things that go over the line, we take care of it,” he said."

Then do something.. Website a lot larger than Topix manage to take care of the troll problem.. Beliefnet.com jumps to mind. As there is literally thousands of forums. With as many pages.. It can be done and has been done.

Thousands of forums is bigger than topix? Wake up and buy a clue. Pick any city in any country in the world and google it and the word topix. You will likely get a hit. Try not to make Mountain Grove look more obtuse and clueless than it already is.

A few examples.

Quit being so touchy.. You think these forums are are bad.. Go over to abortion forums.. Shheessh those forum makes this one look tame..

Trust me on this pal.. This forum is tame compared to the abortion ones.

Flame wars on those threads can last months.. And never really die down.

When I say that topix can and should do something I am not talking about your little corner of Topix. I am talking about the entire website as a whole.

If Topix was serious in it regrets. Then Topix could moderate all these threads. It can be done. Beliefnet.com proves that this true.

It's impossible to moderate topix like other forums are. Topix is the biggest forum out there. I am surprised things get done as quickly as they do.

I'm not touchy, just realistic. There are millions of topix websites, how do you moderate all those, and ultimately it is up to the civil suits to sort out the truth from the falsehoods, not Topix.

Lets say I say X has aids and is sleeping all over town.

SHOULD that be removed from topix?

If X has AIDS and is sleeping all over town I am doing a public service via warning people of a life and death situation.

If X does not then it is libel.

Are you the one that will make that choice, are you going to both moderate and run AIDS tests.

Belief net, shees, go pray to your golden monkey earth goddess over there and quit proving that Mountain Grove is full of flipping idiots.

14k posts you live here and should know better. The only possible way is to let every city and sub forum have a local free moderator or three and leave all the top mods as supermods to oversee the local mods. It would take at least a year to get it in place.

Ever been to beliefnet.com ? Trust it a huge website.. with as many forums as would ever want to see.. Yet it is moderated.. Topix may be choosing not to as it might mean adding more software and possibly some personal. But in all reality.. That is Topix choice not to moderate the various forums. Not that it can not be done. Just that topix as a company chooses not to do so.

http://www.beliefnet.com/Site-Map/Site-Map.as...

This will is a small part of what is actually there.. Webmd his a large web site with thousands of forums for various through toopic.. All Moderated..

Kevin the idea that any website forum is so huge that it can not be moderated is not going to fly..

Topix is not the largest and certainly not the only one out here on the web..

So again Topix chooses not to moderate the forums.. Not that it can not do so..

Possibly with a bot in place to enable a mod to view several forums at once. The programming is actually outside of my field.. I build computers and have built a small server. So while I can say which program that would work for Topix.. I do understand that any forum of any size can be moderated. It's all about how willing the company or group is willing to go in doing so..
