America's Dumbest Tax Loophole: The Florida Rent-a-Cow Scam

There are 6 comments on the www.theatlantic.com story from Apr 18, 2012, titled America's Dumbest Tax Loophole: The Florida Rent-a-Cow Scam. In it, www.theatlantic.com reports that:

The law costs Florida $950 million a year; more than two-thirds of the loophole's top 60 beneficiaries in South Florida weren't farmers.

State tax codes have a way of accumulating junk -- quirky breaks and carve-outs that grow increasingly odd as they linger on the books, like tacky old legislative souvenirs. In Alabama, you can still deduct $1,000 for building a radioactive fallout shelter. In Arkansas, blind combat veterans may buy a new car every two years tax free. In Hawaii, residents can claim a $3,000 deduction for taking care of "exceptional trees" on their property -- as long as an expert deems them "exceptional."

Let's ask ourselves how and why such loopholes are created in the first place.

Who creates the tax laws? Why, our fair and honest elected officials, right? Did a legislator/survivalist in Alabama decide he wanted some underground bunker installed on his property? Brainstorm!!! I'll legislate for a deduction for a fallout shelter.

We have to wonder which legislator in Arkansas has a blind friend or relative who can now get a deduction for the cars he buys for his wife, kids, or other relatives.

And if some lawmaker in Hawaii pays off a gardener, he can get a $3,000 deduction for that shrub in his yard.

This is insane and the American tax payers are footing the bill. These loopholes do not benefit the average American. They were created (and are still being created) by the very people for whom the loopholes will be of personal advantage.

Why don’t we Americans ever become fed up and angry with this fleecing of our money?

You know I don't really have to much of a problem with blind combat veterans getting a new car tax free. When they go to a doctor the person taking them may want to use their car, for whatever reason. Especially if the person taking care if this veteran is a spouse! Now I wouldn't think it would be right for them to buy the car for one of their children to use for their own business. I sure wouldn't want the vet to drive it themselves!

You put me in mind of Eddie Murphy's great routine on Stevie Wonder...
