I find it interesting anonymous did not state how many 50+ ETLs were in the building. One 55 year old TL out of at least 20 leaders in a building is nothing to brag about. Sure there is age discrimination, just look at all the new EITs coming out of business college. In my district we have had a steady reduction of the older ETLs and STLs. Most that were promoted to guest were all on "communication issues". they ran green areas, had great relationship with their teams and were district resources in their respective areas in the previous 6 months. Currently there is a ETL-LOG that is being targeted. Her last birthday she turned 50. She runs a completely green LOG process. Her team respects her and works hard for her. The retention of her team is the best in the building,(which is usually a hard area to retain people). She was the district resource and her last performance review was EX. Her STL is someone that was "fast-tracked" into position. Guess who trained her in the logistics area when she was hired? The ETL who is now on the chopping block. Look at any group of Target stores and you will see scores of 21-30 year old fresh out of college ETLS. The older team members are fine, for now they are safe. In my opinion Target is openly practicing age discrimination in management and no one cares.
I found a lot of what she said interesting :)
The ETL that you are describing is just like my brother-in-law. In fact, the week before he was fired, his store manager told him " You and your team have Too much fun working". He wasn't complimenting him. He thought it was strange that not only did they enjoy working with him, they always got the work done.
What's interesting, most of his team left Target because of his firing. It's sad. I hope someone does end up caring.

Anyone else been targeted by Target Corp because of your age? In AZ, there seems to be a movement by Target to bring in younger, much less experienced ETL's to replace top notched, near perfect performing managers who happen to be near the 55 year mark. My brother-in-law is one such victim. Not one mark against his work record. Very loyal and good to his team members. Age discrimination is the only explanation.
I loved Target.....but I will not spend another dime in their stores. What they do to employees is without conscience. I know corporate greed. I work for one of those types of companies myself. It still shocks the system when it happends to someone you care about.
I would be interested in knowing if anyone else has suffered from age discrimination from Target Corp.
I believe it's happening to me here in Florida, I am 60 and they are trying to move me out.

I believe it's happening to me here in Florida, I am 60 and they are trying to move me out. After being at a Lead position for 6 years with no coachings or any type of write up I am now being forced out. They are now writing me up and building a case. The store new store manager is 29 and everyone they are bringing in is in there 20s.

It's ae11, you are fighting. Document everything! Same thing happened in ae09 with over tl headcount. I have seen some tl's have a choice: demoted to tm with less pay in ae11.

I hired into Target as a GL in their Chambersburg, PA DC back in 2004. In 2006 I took a promotion to be a Group Safety Leader in G496, metro NY. I was part of the group leadership. I was in this role for about 3 yrs and very successful in helping stores develop strong safety cultures. Out of the 28 groups at Target G496 was ranked 3rd for overall safety results. Not an easy thing to do in the NY metro area stores. After the company cut the Group Safety Leader position I transferred to a store in Hicksville, NY as a Hardlines ETL. I have over 10 yrs of management experience and an MBA so my salary was much higher than the average ETL. I had two TL's slotted for my department and when one of them quit the day before Black Friday (oops..Green Friday) they were never replaced. I worked hard at interviewing potential replacements but could never get one through the entire interview process. Even though the other departments were fully staffed I found it alarming that the STL would not move one of them to help out in the department that needed TL's the most (Electronics and Toys). Needless to say we found it difficult to keep up with reshop, revisions, salesplanners, etc because we were short a TL. I was finally being "worked out" because I could not get all the work done even though I spoke to the STL about his refusal to move another TL over to my department. When I finally left Target (the happiest day of my life aside from my kids being born) I found out that within 1 months the STL hired in a TL and actually assigned a third TL in Hardlines. I often wonder if I was "set up" to fail because I was 43 and had a higher salary.

My sister will be 60 this year and works at a Target in Northern US. It's been horrifying to listen to the things she's been subjected to as a Target employee. She's gone to HR many times and all she gets from this is more abuse. When they finally put her into a management training program, they were vicious in making her do extra heavy lifting, working too many departments while not fulfilling their end of the program by training and testing her. She knows she's stuck and she knows they're pushing her out the door. She's a widow, living alone, below poverty. It's indecent. I'll never shop at another Target as long as I live!

Target started eliminating older employees in late 09. I've been with them for 9 years had great reviews ever year and was named top employee of the region in 08. They started coaching older tl out of the building by age and years of service. I new I was next to go since I was 42 years old. Sure enough the bogus coachings began I was even coached for not communicating effectively because I misspelled a word in an email. I saw the new crop of 20 somethings taking over so I tried a new strategy and transferred to a store in Michigan before I went on cca. I have not notice this problem in Michigan probably because it's a strong union state. Good luck to all of the older folks target could give a shit about us we cost them to much cash.
Don't be fooled. it is happening in Michigan. Store leaders are being fired/forced to leave because of their age and time with the company. Do your research!

YES, you are all correct, as someone who was an ETL until a couple of years ago, I have to say you are all correct, partly they think they are appealing to the younger crowd, and they are thinking of the bottom line, the money, a lot of college grads are willing to take really low pay for the promises they are giving them,

Target was made successful on the backs of the experienced managers, it sucks that they think they are above the law and are discriminating at will, I saw the writing on the wall and left on my own, but believe me, I still feel cheated,
FYI, even a few TOP management people have left the company.
I Hope someone gets a lawsuit going, this needs to happen so companies like this cannot continue to discriminate.

Our prior class action covered group 391 based on age discrimination. Do you know where these other class cases are pending? Or have they closed? We also have 2 cases pending where we are seeking class certification. One in OK and one in LA.

Getting the Ax
Longtime Tucson Target employees say they were forced out because of their higher salaries
by Mari Herreras

Manny Lovio's little stack of papers may be the only proof he has that at one time, his career at Target meant something.
Some of the letters are from the principal and a teacher at Richardson Elementary School, thanking him for contributions he made in 2005 for several school events. Another letter is from a local Marine Corps rep thanking him for toy donations.

If you've been inside any Target store, thank-you letters from schools and community organizations are a normal sight, usually displayed in a glass case near the restrooms or customer service. As an executive team member, Lovio says, he chose what donation requests to approve or reject.

On Nov. 12, 2005, he was unexpectedly called into the store manager's office.

According to Lovio, after 26 years with Targetówithout any discipline problems, until the very endóhe was asked to quit. When he refused, he was fired. He was escorted to his desk to clean out his belongings and then guided out of the store in front of co-workers and customers.

Lovio says that he was in a state of shock. He'd lost his career, which started in 1983 when Target first came to town and he got a part-time summer job there.

"It was humiliating," says Lovio.

He took the job right after he'd graduated from San Manuel High School, when he moved to Tucson to go to Pima Community College. Slowly, he moved up at work, starting as a minimum-wage employee and eventually becoming a salaried store executive, sometimes working 60-to-80-hour weeks.

"At one time, I was the only executive who got graded for doing an almost perfect job," he says.

He helped open the Target at El Con Mall and was sent to other stores to help when certain departments weren't performing correctly. His reviews all along were either excellent or outstanding, he says.

A year after being fired, he filed a discrimination complaint with the Civil Rights Division of the Arizona Attorney General's Office, noting that he was replaced by a younger employee who was white. Lovio is Mexican-American.
