I don't think you can blame them for being excited about the proposal. Good for them trying their best to get jobs into a region that has been ignored by many.
Business is business, but let's not forget people are people.

1) They went to a city that has a ready-to-go automotive assembly plan.

2) Toyota is backing them with big bucks.

3) Toyota will assist with technology, design, manufacturing, marketing, sales.

4) Californai was angry when Toyota closed the Fremont plant.

5) This makes everyone happy.

6) Get over it.

What's "plain as dirt" is Tesla was not honest with Downey and Long Beach. Both cities spent big dollars in staff time and effort to bring the car manufacturer to the region. Would have been nice if Tesla, already the recipient of tax incentives, would have been honest with local taxpayers and at least let the cities know what the playing field was. I saw the photo of the Governator smiling with Toyota and Tesla execs, what role did he play? How long did he know there was a silent deal being cut while two other cities were spending money trying to make the deal? Another state rip off of local funds?

Okay, so Tesla was shopping for the best deal. They got a lot more than what Downey or Long Beach could offer. So, why would Tesla NOT sign the contract to have their plant in Fremont? If i was in their shoes, I would have done the same thing. So, you piss off a couple of people in Downey and Long Beach. No big deal. Downey was told differently? Well, well well. Haven't they heard of the phrase, "talk is cheap." Well, that's a big lesson for the city.

Yeah, but Tesla will not produce a car that will not sell (or last) in competition with other technologies. All the money and tax incentives offered to Tesla for a plant that probably won't last five years.

How can an electric car compete with an efficient gasoline powered vehicle, including hybrids. It has limited range and when the batteries go dead, it takes HOURS to recharge them. If you live just a few miles from work, by all means, waste your money on an electric car so you can feel good in the PC world of eco-friendly cars.

The batteries used in these vehicles are made with rare metals that are in far less supply than petroleum products and are highly toxic. The cure seems worse than the disease.
